In the 2010 film, Maximus is introduced as the elite mount of the Captain of the Guard. Unlike standard royal horses, Maximus possesses the tracking skills, fierce determination, and personality of a bloodhound. When Flynn Rider steals the crown jewels and escapes into the woods, the Captain is thrown off, but Maximus continues the pursuit independently. He operates on a strict moral code of justice, making it his personal mission to capture Flynn. His fierce rivalry with the thief takes a turn when he meets Rapunzel. Recognizing her innocence and kindness, Maximus agrees to a temporary truce with Flynn for her sake, eventually transitioning from a relentless hunter into a loyal ally who breaks Flynn out of prison to save the princess.

While the original film showcases his law enforcement career, the animated series Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure expands on his life and duties in the kingdom:

• The Promotion: Following the events of the movie, Maximus is officially promoted to Captain of the Royal Guard, making him the first animal to hold the highest military and law enforcement rank in Corona.

• The Training Academy: The series reveals that Maximus takes charge of training the palace guards, enforcing strict physical and behavioral standards on his human subordinates.

• Axel the Rival: The lore introduces Axel, a deceptive stallion belonging to a rival kingdom, who challenges Maximus’s authority and forces him to prove his superior tactical and combat skills.

Production Inspiration

Behind the scenes, animators wanted to subvert the classic "noble steed" trope common in fairy tales. Legendary animator Glen Keane led the team to model Maximus's behavior on a trained police dog rather than a typical horse. Animators studied the movements of German Shepherds, incorporating heavy sniffing, tail wagging, and aggressive front-paw digging into his character animation. His sword-fighting style—where he holds a saber firmly in his teeth—was inspired by classic martial arts films to give him the presence of an unstoppable, intelligent action hero.
