The Clock for the Practice of Time
These works are part of the series The Clock for the Practice of Time, each consisting of fixed-point photography carried out over a full day (24 hours) at locations in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture.
Bench depicts scenes of everyday life: ships sailing across the background, men taking an afternoon nap, and, after nightfall, flashing factory lights and people enjoying fireworks.
Basketball Hoop presents the view from the artist’s own window. It captures people practicing basketball shooting, an evening storm, and, once the sun has set, streetlights illuminating the plants—revealing scenery quite different from the daytime.
Univerdome shows a stone monument in an open space next to Gakuen-toshi Station, filmed from a camera installed on the roof. The tiled floor design forms a floral shape. The video reveals people doing morning radio calisthenics, commuters rushing to the station, and, in the evening, Bon Festival dances and street dancing.
Kirin captures a view of Kobe Harbor. The title, “Kirin” (meaning “giraffe” in Japanese), refers to the resemblance of the harbor cranes to long-necked animals as they lower and stack containers. Various ships can be seen arriving throughout the day and night.
