Heartsick for Poppies is an interactive narrative game created in Twine. The game tells the story of what it's like to immigrate to a country at a young age, struggling with which country you identify with - the country you were born in or the country you were raised in. Try to deny your nationality and then realize how much you miss the country you are from.
I decided to do moments where you can reject or accept where you're from because growing up, I felt like I was constantly faced with that decision. Rejection was the easiest choice, the one that made me feel like I belonged more to where I was currently living. Acceptance was one of the more complex emotions. It took me until I was in my 20s to start to connect to my culture and find a middle ground between the two places.
I used the image of the poppy, as it is the national flower of Poland. To reward the player for making the choice of acceptance, they receive a flower; however, if the player rejects their culture, the flower wilts.
