In Math this month, we will finish our unit on Time and money by telling time to the 5 minute marker, and adding coins to $3.00. We will then study data and graphs, including creating graphs utilizing data we have collected, interpreting and answering questions about graphs, and interpreting different types of data collection. Then we will study probability to finish the year.
This month, we will complete our Author Study unit. We explored different story elements in the fiction books we read of three different authors We will read books by Helen Lester, Mary Pope Osborne, and Kwame Alexander. The second week of the month we will be studying nonfiction subject topics, and organize our learning in our reading notebooks. We will generate questions to gather information.
During the first week of May we will finish our illustrator and author study, and celebrate our work. Then we will begin to work in Research, writing an All About book following research we have completed as part of our Reading unit. We will learn to organize information from recommended resources and write a paper on a selected topic of interest. We will learn to put information from texts and resources into our own words as we write about these topics.
In Social Studies this month, we will be learning about Memorial Day and Independence Day. We will also learn about important innovations in the field of communication and transportation. We will have a field trip to Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum to tie in with our air transportation innovations. We will also study famous Americans, including Helen Keller, Caesar Chavez, Thurgood Marshall, and Jackie Robinson.
This month we will complete our plants unit. We will learn that plants are important natural resources. We will learn about how plants provide oxygen, homes, and food for many animals. We will discover the life cycle of a plant and discuss the words seed, germination, stem, root, leaves, flower, and production.
