(Click to expand for more information about the award)

This award was commissioned in 2013 by Softball Victoria and was named the Rookie Statistician Award.  In 2018 it was renamed the Statistician Rising Star Award.

The award is for eligible Victorian softball scorers who have demonstrated their skill and passion for softball scoring through their contribution to their team, club, Association and / State program. The award recognizes the most promising rising scorer, taking into account talent, commitment and dedication to improving their scoring knowledge and skills.

In 2019 Softball Victoria renamed the Victorian Rising Scorer of the Year to the Mary Walkinshaw Scoring Award in recognition of Mary's dedicated service to the Victorian Scoring Program.

Mary first played softball in Melbourne Royal Park in Parkville for the YCW Association.

Her profession as a teacher saw her take on a teaching role in Drouin. During her time at Drouin she became a founding member of the Drouin South softball Club.  Mary during her time took on the task of being Secretary of West Gippsland Softball Association a position she held for several years before then becoming President of this Association. Life Membership to the Association was awarded to Mary during this time.  At sometime Mary left Drouin to transfer back to Melbourne where at this time Waverley Association became her home base. It is during this time that she obtained her level one and two scoring accreditation which was being formed.  Mary Walkinshaw achieved her Level 3 accreditation as a statistician in 1992 and was transitioned to

Level 4 NOAS in May 2007. Mary has held her National Level since 1996.

Mary has been a lecturer for all scoring levels since 1999, a span of 18 years when she has given up numerous Sundays and evenings for the benefit of all statisticians across Victoria. Mary has always been willing to teach, train and mentor scorers at club and association level just as much as when she was doing the higher levels of open state or national tournaments.

Mary has played and umpired for much of the time she has been a statistician. Mary’s diversity in these roles have been apparent at many Masters Tournaments when she has been seen changing from playing uniform to umpiring attire and then another change in preparation to score or play depending on what was required of her.

Mary has been a volunteer and umpire at many Waverley Easter Junior tournaments that cater for intra and interstate teams during her time at Waverley.
