- Sun Tzu
Paddling in itself is pretty straight-forward, it's a combination of the right movements that propels the boat forward in the most efficient way possible.
The person in charge will issue commands verbally and everyone is expected to follow those commands. We ask everyone to remain quiet while on the boat for safety reasons (so everyone can hear the commands) with the exception of the tiller/captain/caller. We'll have plenty of time to chat and party when we are off boat :)
If it's your first time paddling or you haven't paddled in a while, it would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the commands below.
STAND-BY: Pay attention and await for next command.
PADDLES UP: Paddles in forward position, ready to hit the water.
BACK PADDLE POSITION: Paddles above the water ready to take a back stroke.
TAKE IT AWAY: Start paddling.
LET IT RUN: Stop paddling, let the boat coast to a stop.
BACK IT DOWN, NOW: Paddle backwards, in sync with the lead strokes (front bench)
DRAW: Move the boat sideways. Paddlers will extend their paddle over the water perpendicular to the boat (paddle is moving towards you as you draw water).
HOLD: Hold the boat in place, paddle is perpendicular to the boat with the blade completely submerged.
HOLD FOR DRIFT: prevent boat from moving sideways; paddle is parallel to the boat with the blade completely submerged.
BRACE THE BOAT: There's big waves, or paddlers are changing positions. Same position as 'hold for drift.
GIVE ME [#] STROKES, NOW: A precise number of strokes is needed for fine-tuning the boat's position.
