SPECIAL ATTENTION NEEDED
If your child has been placed in a class that requires advanced preparation you will have already received notification. Below is the information detailing what should be prepared for each of these classes.
Guitar
If your child is scheduled for Guitar, they will need to provide their own instrument (strings strung and in good shape). Guitars should be acoustic, not electric. You may borrow one from a friend, or use one of the places listed below to rent one if you would like. If you are planning to rent one, please call early as they always seem to run out of stock just when SummerSing starts. If you are unable to find a guitar to borrow or rent, please let us know in advance as we may be able to find one that they may borrow for the class.

Organ
If your child is scheduled for Organ, please click here to download and print “Trust and Obey” (Hymn #349) and have them prepare the piece on the piano. They should be familiar with the piece on the piano before they arrive on the first day of SummerSing. Then we will be able to start adding in the other pedals right away!
Outdoor Survival
If your child is scheduled for Outdoor Survival, there is no advanced preparation, but we wanted to give you a heads up for what to expect in the class. As time, weather, and materials allow, we will teach some combination of the following skills: construct a lean-to shelter, build a fire (possibly various methods), make and set a small game trap, make a spear for fish, primitive water purification, rappel from a secured ladder, etc. Many of these activities involve the kids using knives, cordage, and walking in wooded/overgrown parts of the Idlewild property. They will need proper clothes and footwear to have the most enjoyable experience in this class (sneakers and T-shirts, not tanks and flip flops). Do not bring any knives or outdoor survival tools from home. They will be provided. We will maintain our excellent standard of safety and supervision, but due to the nature of these activities, there is a higher chance of minor incidents occurring than if your child took a different SummerSing class (like Sign Language, etc.). We will be holding the kids to a high standard of maturity and responsibility as they learn these valuable skills. Your child will be able to purchase a pocket knife used in this class for $6. Parents may pick one up at the Outdoor Survival table on Family Night. Be sure to show your child’s dismissal card and bring $6 (exact change please) to pick one up. If you feel that these class activities are not suitable for your child, please let us know by Friday July 5th so we can make the proper arrangements for a schedule change.
Say Cheese
If your child is scheduled for Say Cheese, have them bring in a digital camera. If you do not have access to a digital camera, a phone camera may be used to meet the purposes of this class. Whichever you choose, be sure that your camera is fully charged and has storage room available for lots of pictures! While “Say Cheese” is a class designed to teach basic camera function, we will focus on photography basics, and what makes a good picture.
Scrapbooking & Paper Crafting
If your child is scheduled for the ScrapBooking & Paper Crafting class, please have them bring 15-20 photos (and other flat memorabilia, such as movie tickets, notes, etc. if they would like). If possible, the photos should range in size from 3x5 to 4x6. We will be making Explosion Boxes! Each participant gets to choose their own theme for their box (e.g. Family Time, Friends, Vacation, Birthday, Beach Days, Christmas, My Life, etc.) so try to have the pictures fit in with their chosen theme. No other supplies are required; however, they are welcome to bring their choice of stickers or embellishments to match the theme of the photos from home. We recommend using a Ziplock bag (insert a piece of cardboard to prevent bending of photos) to transport photos and other items to help prevent the materials from getting wrinkled or damaged.
Ukulele
If your child is scheduled for ukulele , we will be providing ukuleles for use in the classroom so there is no need to rent or borrow an instrument for the week.
If you already own a ukulele, we suggest that you leave it at home so you can have it there to practice in the evenings.
If you do not have a ukulele at home and would like to practice in the evenings, we will make them available to check out at the end of the day on Monday. We do not have extra ukuleles, so if you do check out your ukulele, it’s important you remember to bring it back the next morning to use in the classroom.
The sign out sheet for ukuleles will be at the registration table in the Gatheria (by the umbrellas) on Monday afternoon at dismissal.
