The History Of Bellydance

The ancient art of Belly Dance, referred to in the Middle East as Raks Sharki, or "Dance of the East (Orient)," is truly one of the most captivating forms of art in existence. There are no written histories on the origin and purpose of the dance, yet many speculate that it came from ancient fertility rites as a way of strengthening a woman's body to prepare for childbirth through undulating abdominal and pelvic movements. Some of these techniques can be seen in current-day Lamaze classes.

The modern version of this dance is deeply rooted in the folkloric dances of the Middle East and North Africa. A powerful, earthy feel coupled with the beautiful and natural flow of the body is key in the articulation of the dance. Belly Dance exudes passion through musical interpretation and "feeling" the music rather than analyzing it.

Raks Sharki is quickly gaining recognition as a legitimate and authentic art form. Dancers from around the world have dedicated their lives to the preservation of this once ancient dance and the progression of it as a living form of art.

The History of Hula

Hula is a Polynesian dance form that portrays a visual interpretation of a song or chant. Traditional Hula dancing is quite complex. Many types of hand movements can be incorporated to express a broad variety of meanings. Hip and foot movements also convey meaning. Ancient hula was a form of praise or worship to deities or chieftains, or a way to commemorate victories in battle or other important aspects of history. Since the original Hawaiian inhabitants did not have a written language, the songs, chants, and dances were vital in preserving the people's historical accounts. Modern hula reflects much Western influence, including the use of non-traditional instruments such as guitar, bass, and ukulele, and has been adapted so as to appeal to tourists of Western Society. The color and style of costuming also play an important role in hula.

The History of Jazz (Dance)

Jazz dance is the performance dance technique and style that emerged in America in the early twentieth century. Jazz dance began as an African American social dance that had roots in African slave dances. Over time, a clearly defined jazz genre emerged, changing from a street dance to a theatrical dance performed on stage. Its origins can be traced back to the African ritual and celebratory dances from around the eighteenth century. These dances had an emphasis on rhythm, groundedness, and a connection to the earth. They were traditionally done to the beat of African drums. In the early 1900s in New Orleans, the new music was combining elements of blues and ragtime. The 1930s were also the start of jazz dance being combined into live musical theatre shows and movie musicals. There are now many subcategories of jazz that each have their own distinct qualities and characteristics. Main subcategories of jazz include Classic, Contemporary, Commercial, Latin, and Afro.
