Spoke is a mass texting tool that we access through National DSA. It is easy to use. Sending texts through Spoke is a good task to ask of members (old and new) to get more involved.
Spoke enables volunteers on a Spoke Team to send mass texts to dozens or hundreds of members at once through a browser instead of texting people individually.
All requests can be made via a member of chapter Leadership.
Request / Mass Text. Please review the Mass Texting Request Guide prior to requesting a campaign.
The Spoke Lead(s) sets up the mass text information. Lead(s) will need to provide their own texting Spoke Team (volunteers who would like to send texts).
DSA National can start taking your chapter's specific campaign requests via the Spoke Campaign Request form*
The invite link to sign up for an account and to do a campaign in Spoke will only work on a computer web browser (Google Chrome works the best according to Spoke REWIRED support team, but only real requirement is working from a web browser on a computer).
This means volunteers for a Spoke Team can not work (send texts) on a phone or tablet.
*only Spoke Lead(s) should fill out the Spoke Campaign Request Form. Spoke Lead(s) will set up the initial script as well as any canned responses they would like their Spoke Team to reply with.
To set up a Spoke Team a Lead will need the full name (first and last) and emails of the entire team and should have the initial script and canned responses ready to input into the Request Form.
For Spoke REWIRED, folks will need to watch this training here - training video [10 minutes]
Spoke REWIRED can only be used on laptop/computer web browser. It is a web browser page that you will click through to send texts. You will also be able to send reply messages to people who respond. Check the canned responses which should have options for sample responses. If you are unsure of what to say in response for a particular message please message the Spoke Lead(s) or comrade who assigned you this task.
To send an initial message:
Open the Spoke Campaign you are assigned.
Click Send first texts.
Click Send for all assigned numbers.
Note: You cannot edit the initial message. This will have been set up by the Spoke Lead(s).
After you send all your texts out; you will be sent back to your homepage. You're most likely not going to get immediate responses to your initial text; feel free to take a step away and get a snack, refresh the page when you get back. When a contact responds, the conversation will reappear under the Send replies category.
To send replies to contacts who have responded to an initial message:
Open your homepage in Spoke.
Click Send replies.
Along the bottom of the screen are buttons and one of them says Canned Responses; click on that and select the most appropriate response someone has texted to you. (Initial questions are usually yes/no answers but someone may surprise you with something else).
(Optional) We recommend using the response that your Spoke Leads have carefully crafted for you; but if you need to you can add and edit the canned responses to better respond; check in with your Spoke Lead(s) and team accordingly.
Click Send.
*If someone responds that they have moved or to take them off this list, PLEASE make note of their full name (first and last) for the Spoke Lead(s) and only after you have noted their name and given to the Lead(s); you can then click on the Opt Out button alone the bottom.*
You can also use the Skip Reply button if any additional texts do not require a response.
Following this procedure takes the conversation out of your to-do list. When the contact responds, the conversation will re-enter your to-do list.
