Digital Photo II

Digital Photography II (ARTS 2850) The ethics, functions, and styles of digital photography are presented through lectures, reading, research and studio assignments. The final portfolio is a visually and conceptually unified body of photographic work. The portfolio begins with research to find inspiration and enables students to identify their influences. Through regular critiques of ongoing work, students refine their ideas, identify and resolve technical challenges, and determine the appropriate form to best express their vision.

Revolving by Hannah Vetelino

The subject matter is abstract and unrecognizable distortions which create a circular form similar to spirals and mandalas. In Hindu and Budists cultures, mandalas are a symbol of the Cosmos, in other words the universe as a well-ordered whole. Traditionally mandalas are shown as a circle within a square which is why I decided to crop all of these photographs in a square format. Also, mandalas are used for meditation, healing, prayer, and art therapy. In clinical trials they were even proven to boost your immune system, reduce stress, lower blood pressure, promote sleep, and ease depression. As for spirals, they symbolize many things such as development, moral growth, the journey into the unknown, and life itself. Like Spirals and Mandalas, this body of work represents moving through life, healing from the past, embracing change, and expanding personal growth. Even by completing this portfolio, I feel as though I have discovered new things and grown my knowledge as a photographer.

Sibling Rivalry by Zachary Hunsinger

My Sibling Rivalry series is a narrative work that tells a linear story about twins at odds against each other, and one commits a horrible act and faces the consequences in the end. It's a story so linear, that it almost feels like a movie is being played out. I’ve been exploring narrative and storytelling for a while now and I wanted to try that out in photography. While photography does tell stories through images, I wanted to explore story telling by using the camera as a filmmaking tool instead of using the camera to take random photos or artistic shots that look beautiful and aren't linear with its story. I tried to think of myself as a filmmaker while telling a story.
