Color (ARTS 1020) Color is visible energy. As such, its effective use is essential in practically all aspects of art and design. This course presents an introduction to basic color theory and composition. Students develop a keen understanding of color systems and harmonies and explore practical applications of these theories through a variety of creative studio assignments.

Inspired by tragedy and loss, this self-portrait uses complementary colors to convey Stephanie's world on fire- as seen through her own lenses. Rich, deep purples are used to represent her true character underneath it all.
3D Color Wheel
Color wheels are maps that display important information regarding color relationships. Students create a basic twelve-step color wheel and understand the fundamentals of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. Furthermore students take that understanding into the real world and find objects that correspond to their wheel. This assignment introduces students to the basic principles and properties of color, as well as how color is being used in our everyday life.
Color Ways Portrait
Students are tasked to create three portraits in three different color ways/groups (Monochromatic, Analogous, Complementary) in which they can only use 5 colors. This assignment not only allows students to explore various color groupings, but students also understand the psychology of color by representing the same image with three different color combinations.
