Digital Art

Digital Art (ARTS 1840) is an exploration of computer based image making as an effective means of artistic expression. Students learn the fundamentals of graphics applications and acquire both manual and conceptual skills associated with creativity in the digital realm. Projects provide experience with image manipulation, montage, and animation.

Collage

Students collected ten images responding to a series of prompts, with an emphasis on personal significance. These images then formed the basis of a collage that was intended to serve as a visual embodiment of the student. In the process of creating these "avatars" students developed an understanding of raster-based image editing including manipulations, compositing, and digital painting.

Icon / Illustration

Working from collages, students create an icon or illustration which expresses who they are. Students distill their collages into simple forms which communicate clearly. The figure ground relationship is introduced as a design concept, and vector graphics are introduced as a digital technique.

Animation

Students create short animations which reveal their icon. The way their icon is introduced is related to what the icon stands for. This project covers fundamental principles of animation including cause and effect, story arc, staging, and gravity.
