When it comes to a zombie-themed drama or movie, South Korea has great creators of such genre. Their first major zombie film ‘Train to Busan’ gained immense popularity way back in 2016 and bagged different awards from being a blockbuster hit. This movie has started it all, and from then, South Korea kept producing exciting and intriguing zombie-related content. Recently, there has been a new addition to this popular zombie genre: the Netflix series ‘All of Us Are Dead’. The series is considered the most-watched Netflix series for the third week.
The series became popular on Netflix because of how relatable it is, and at the same time, we can learn something from it. It tackled young love, unrequited love, friendship, bullying, and the importance of family. Thus, here are some of the things we learned from the series (Warning: Spoilers Ahead!):
We all know that the Jonas Virus was made by Lee Byeong Chan, the science teacher of Hyosan High School. He specifically creates this virus to make his son violent or aggressive as this rat hormone triggers the fight or flight response to fight for himself. This is one of the significant plots included in the series as it tackles bullying and fighting for yourself but sadly, the virus only did harm to everyone. It didn’t solve the major problem here, which is bullying. Instead, it made the bullies even more violent because of how powerful they have felt due to the Jonas Virus.
Our leads experienced weariness not just physically but mainly emotionally. They have just witnessed their schoolmates and teachers turn into zombies, but they had felt much more pain when their friends and family turned into one. Additionally, while they are fighting for their lives, they feel hopeless as no one is coming to save them. Imagine experiencing unimaginable grief, sadness, and hopelessness all at once! Although they have felt all these emotions, they still manage to live and be alive. It demonstrates the amount of resilience and the strength they have shown amidst difficulties which also equates to real-life adversities.
The main leads became leaders at some point in the series, such as Choi Nam-Ra, their Class President and Yoon Chan Young. A good leader decides and listens to what will benefit the group and is open to suggestions. In the series, once they have thought of a good idea on how to surpass a particular challenge, they always step up to be a leader in order for them to avoid danger. Likewise, in the real world, don’t hesitate to lead, especially if your actions will benefit others, you might not realize it, but you may have the qualities or skills to be a great leader.
The series depicts how parents can go to extreme lengths to save or protect their children, to the point that they are willing to risk their lives. For instance, we witness how Chanyoung’s mom entered the school premises despite a bunch of zombies around. Meanwhile, Onjo’s father courageously faced authorities and soldiers, managed to go to Hyosan High School, fought an army of zombies, and sacrificed himself just to ensure his daughter’s safety. Indeed, parents love is unconditional.
