There are three places in Stoke-on-Trent for secondary teacher training, the OAKS, St Joseph's College SCITT and Staffordshire University.
For primary teacher training there are several providers including Keele and North Staffordshire Teacher Education, Britannia Teaching School and Potteries Teaching School Alliance.

The OAKS is an innovative SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training programme) which links Keele University and OSSMA (Ormiston Sir Stanley Matthews Academy) with a long established partnership of schools in five local authorities – Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent, Shropshire, Birmingham and Cheshire.
St Joseph’s College SCITT is an accredited provider of Initial Teacher Training. Our School Direct programme is now in its third year and has delivered outstanding outcomes for its trainees, as well as demonstrating impressive rates of completion and employment for our trainees.
The PGCE at Staffordshire University offers specialist support and expertise from tutors who are at the forefront of developments in Mathematics. It is characterised by small class sizes allowing effective links with the schools in our partnership.
The course aims to develop your professional competencies in the creation and delivery of programmes in secondary education, and to develop the wider professional knowledge and skills expected of a qualified teacher.
Keele and North Staffordshire Teacher Education are a small provider, with a nurturing ethos and an amazing partnership of schools. The vision ‘Rooted In Evidence, Reaching for Excellence’; underpins the offer of a distinctive combination of subject specialisms rather than a purely generalist training combined with a strong emphasis on high quality school-based input; an expectation to exceed the Teachers’ Standards; a partnership which is made up of primary, special and middle schools and comprises a mixture of large and small, urban and rural, faith schools, local authority and academy settings. Partner schools are predominately located in Stoke-on-Trent, and across Staffordshire, not just the north of the county.
PTSA School Direct offers a one year school-based programme where trainees are part of a school team from the very start. Training is shared across the Alliance giving contrasting experiences in different settings working with outstanding practitioners. Trainee Teachers, who complete the course with Keele University, are awarded a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate of Education) with QTS, those who complete their training with st Joseph’s SCITT will receive QTS. Both programs allow trainees to develop a full understanding of a teacher’s roles and responsibilities, ensuring full preparation for the teaching profession.
BTSA run a School Direct teacher training programme. This is an excellent opportunity for graduates and career changers to join the teaching profession. School Direct is a new route into teaching that places the school based programme at the heart of the experience.
The programme is primary with a 3-7, 5-11 and a SEND pathway and training is in primary schools across Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent and Cheshire.
The School Direct teacher training route is led by BTSA, working in partnership with local schools and The University of Derby.
As well as Qualified Teacher Status, trainees will also gain a PGCE equivalent to a third of a masters degree with The University of Derby upon completion of the programme.
