1. Describe the lessons you learned from these topics:
1a. what are the main components of tourism, hospitality and travel industry?
1b. why is customer service important for the hospitality industry?
1c. what life lessons did you learn from our ice breakers?
The main components of Tourism, Hospitality, and Travel Industry that I learned was customer service. Customer Service is important because it helps attract and bring back existing customers to your business, it gives them an overview of how you treat your customers and is the dealbreaker on how people view your business. I learned a lot about my classmates and was able to recall things my parents have told me, such as some quotes they have told me to live by, such as "Keep working hard, it'll be worth it."
2. What were your most memorable experiences from our class?
The "Be a Tourist" fieldtrip was definetly something that excited me. I learned many things about the island's history that I hadn't known about before, such as how the Japanese soldiers killed themselves when they were close to losing the war. I even learned things about my own location, fort Apugan, like how it was used by both the Spanish, Japanese, and Americans.
3. If I had to redo my school year, what would I do differently? How did you adapt to double session at JFK?
I would work twice as hard to join the soccer team, I made 1 too many mistakes, and it got me cut. The coach still respects me though and expects me to try out again next year. Other than that, I have no regrets. I adapted to the double session at JFK very quickly because it rarely interferes with my schedule. So I was able to wake up and do what I can on time.
4. Rate your effort and attendance for our class (5 being the highest to 1 being the lowest) and describe your one challenge and one success during this school year.
Without sounding cocky, I would give myself a 5. I did what I could this year, and I did my family proud. My challenge was that I was shy and was trying to do things that freshmen me would've never thought of doing, such as trying out for soccer, but it paid off when I forced myself to do it. My success is the same thing, exceeding my own expectations.
5. Add at least two favorite photos of your class from this school year.
BE A TOURIST FIELD TRIP
1. From a tourist's perspective, Guam has beautiful scenery and interesting historical spots. Most of these places are well preserved so you get a good view of Guam in the past. You learn new things as you travel to different sides of the island, this is one of Guam's strengths. One of the weaknesses on the other hand, was that the island is pretty dirty, some people just don't care and throw their trash around, ruining the beautiful island.
2. My favorite site was South Pacific Memorial Park. It wasn't a big place, but it was quiet, peaceful, and well kept. It has interesting history that you would enjoy hearing about. I was surprised to see a pickle tree there.
3. I visited all the sites for the first time ever, for Two Lovers Point I did go on a field trip there in 6th grade at one point but we didn't actually go to the cliff side. I enjoyed seeing places I've never walked around in before!
4. We presented about the history of Fort Apugan and how the Spanish, Japanese, and Americans used it as a defensive unit. I felt I did a good job as I never really stuttered and was able to pull through the presentation without needing my notes.
5. I enjoyed getting closer with my peers, it's rare for me to befriend someone easily so this was a great experience for me. The bus rides were also fun and it felt like luxury.
6. I wish I brought a jacket, I did get rather cold at times, but other than that, no complaints. I loved the opportunity.
CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT
April 17th, 2024
This classroom is one I look forward to being in everyday, and that I look forward to being in everyday, in fact it's the only class that I regularly look forward to. My peers are all nice and Mr. Chong has really helped us grow closer together, not just as classmates, but as friends. Mr. Chong especially is a great and outgoing person that's easy to warm up to. He is very accommodating and provides the perfect example for customer service. I feel respected and appreciated in the class, and it helped me to grow stronger mentally. I love the classroom environment.
March 27th - April 1st 2024
WHAT? - The Japanese club of Simon Sanchez High School held an off-island field trip to Osaka, Japan during the Spring Break. It was a great opportunity to explore the world and help students try out new things that Guam wouldn't usually have.
SO WHAT? - We got to immerse ourselves in the Japanese culture and learn more about their tradition and how it differs from Guam. It also helped me grow closer to other members of the club that I wasn't familiar with.
NOW WHAT? - I now have a greater appreciation for the Japanese culture and the opportunities that come my way. In some cases like me, it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity and I learned so much more things about Japan that I didn't know of before.
FRESHMEN RECRUITMENT
February 5th, 2024
WHAT? - We presented to the Class of 2027, telling them about HTMP and the benefits of joining it. We went over the benefits, what we do, why we joined it, and etc. I told them about my personal experiences as a way to persuade them to join Hospitality.
SO WHAT? - This is a way to practice my customer service, as I tried to help the freshmen feel welcome and comfortable as I talked to them. It also made me feel more comfortable talking in front of a large group.
NOW WHAT? - Now I hope that my talk had persuaded the freshmen to join this program. Hopefully, Mr. Chong will stay if our presentation succeeds. Hopefully Hospitality is a success and I can help the new HosTs next year and make even more friends!
JAPAN AUTUMN FESTIVAL
November 18th, 2023
WHAT? - The Japan Autumn Festival , or "Aki Matsuri" is an annual festival held at Ypao Beach in Guam where it welcomes the autumn season while also sharing the Japanese culture. Japanese dishes & activities are shared to everyone around with many food vendors and performances. I worked at the drink vendor, distributing drinks and stocking them up.
SO WHAT? - It gave me a short shift and now I will know what there is to expect from jobs like that. I got to work both front-of-the-house and back-of-the-house. I got to help restock drinks in the back and also interact and sell things to customers in the front. It's great to get a short glimpse of what to expect in this industry.
NOW WHAT? - I can apply what I did today to any potential jobs I get in the future under the Hospitality industry. I now know how easy it is to talk to customers with a smile on my face. I also know how to interact in a friendly manner to not only customers, but also the people working besides me.

WHAT? - The International Coastal Cleanup is an event hosted every year since 1986, where people all over Guam come together to help Guam's environment by cleaning up numerous beaches all around the island.
SO WHAT? - The purpose of this experience is to help make the island a better place for both animals and humans alike. By continuing to clean Guam, we are helping every living thing here, and it should stay like that.
NOW WHAT? - Participating in the International Coastal Cleanup has inspired me to clean up more, as Tanguisson was definetly a lot more beautiful without the beach. It is also a great way to socialize with some of my friends and have fun with others.

RITIDIAN BEACH CLEANUP
WHAT? - Every first Saturday of the month, Mr. Chong and our Hospitality class heads down to Ritidian Beach to clean it up. We are often joined by organizers and volunteers.
SO WHAT? - This is not only for the turtles that live around, but also for the environment in general. There was not too much trash around Ritidian, which is a huge plus for both us and the environment.
NOW WHAT? - Although it was very tiring and exhausting, I am glad that we are helping the environment and I will be more than happy to join in again whenever I'm free.
