What makes it difficult to find entry level hires?
(08-29-25)
1st paragraph: cite current events, news, job announcements, and articles that confirm the situation.
After
2nd paragraph: Describe the causes of this problem (provide 3 - 5 possible causes).
3rd paragraph: If you were the employer or consultant to the employer, what are the solutions to solve this problem? (Provide at least three recommendations)
Finding new entry-level workers is becoming a problem in Guam's hospitality industry. According to The Marianas Business Journal says that Guam Hotel and Resturant Association is worried about ongoing staff shortages. They are asking for more solutions to support tourism, as hiring and keeping workers has been a problem in the industry. Positions such as housekeeping, front desk, and other entry -level positions are hard to fill. Pacific Daily News also says business owners report that many applicants lack basic skills, and never start their scheduled shifts.
The hiring problem in Guam's hospitality industry comes from several causes. First applicants lack basic job skills or experience making it more difficult for businesses to train them quickly. Second low wages and limited benefits can also make these jobs less attractive compared to others. Third applicants mat not have reliable transportation limiting their ability to get to work. Lastly hospitality jobs often require night, weekend, and holiday shifts which some people avoid.
If I was an employer ot consultant, there are several ways to fix the problem of hiring entry-level workers in Guam. Offering better pay and benefits can make jobs more attractive to applicants. Providing training and guidance programs so workers can learn what they need. Offering flexible scheduling allowing part time or split shifts. Meaning workers can come in at different times during the day instead of a long shift. This helps people who have family responsiblities ans more. By giving these oppertunities more people might be able to take the job and keep it for a long period of time.

WHERE ARE WE?
We are at 40% of the tourism rates pre-COVID. Very low compared to what we had before corona hit. It's been declining over the course of several year, such as the incident with Jeju air, which cut our travel rates from Korea in half. Tourists are not happy with the overpriced items and poor conditions of the buildings. It gets dead at nighttime and activities are very limited. It's no wonder why tourists are being driven away from Guam.
WHERE WOULD WE LIKE TO BE?
We need tourists and we need them asap. We want to try and sell out on tickets for airlines coming from foreign countries and to maintain satisfactory reviews for tourists who come over. The government needs to actually take action instead of just sitting back and relaxing. We need to prioritize tourism if we want our economy to boom. It's an effort from the whole govguam.
HOW DO WE GET THERE?
We need to prioritize tourism! We have to offer more to tourists instead of just beaches and restaurants. Make Tumon feel more alive at night so it gives the tourists something to look at. Stop focusing on money and start focusing on why the tourists are here. Be UNIQUE considering we're a small island in the middle of the Pacific. Make areas look clean and beautiful then we can actually be a tropical beauty.
HOW DO WE MAKE SURE WE GET THERE?
We need to know our audience. We have to target children as well, not just adults, so that the kids can have fun too instead of just being dragged along to fitting in the parents' budget. We should also have more attractions open during nighttime to make Guam feel alive 24/7. A point that cannot be stressed enough is to make sure everything is clean and focus on the quality of items and the tourists' experiences. Money is NOT everything. Once we understand that, then we can understand how the tourists feel.
HOW DO WE KNOW IF WE GOT THERE?
If we're earning atleast half of what we were earning pre-COVID, and it'll only get better from there. If people are truly happy with coming to Guam and think that it wasn't a waste of their time, that's how we know we did our job and hopefully things improve over time. It won't just happen overnight; it will take a while. But by the end of it, Guam should be a hotspot for tourists and locals a like.
PRODUCT: I would offer youth coaching services for teams that are U12 or under. I have a coaching license and am knowledgeable on the subject. At the age, players are expected to have an understanding of how to play and to have some tactics in mind but still need to learn how to just have fun and play the game. I'd like to put my brain to the test and see how I can manage a team of promising young players.
PRICE: $8 per session, coaches don't usually make much in Guam. Infact, at my team, all the coaches are volunteers. $8 a session seems fair for a young coach teaching younger players how to give it their all and have a fun time with the game.
PLACE: GFA has fields available for training on Tuesdays for my club, so that's when I'd take the opportunities to give out my coaching services. The field has a lot of goals and a lot of empty space for teams to train, so it would be a perfect opportunity to take.
PROMOTION: I'm already a familiar face around GFA, mainly because of my teammates, the staff, referees, and people from other leagues. The head coach of my team already trusts me and I would be glad to take the chance to show up and do my work one day, I'll get some videos recorded so that I can share them around, and things will hopefully work out.
What is the number of arrivals in Guam in 2024?

What is the percentage of arrivals in 2024 compared to 2019?
Compared to 2019, Guam has a 37% arrival rate by tourists in 2024.
TAF stands for Tourist Attraction Fund, which is from hotel occupancy tax. What is the percentage of occupancy tax per guestroom in Guam?
The percentage of occupancy tax per guestroom in Guam is 11%
Add one more factor not mentioned in the "Factors affecting visitors' travel"
Another factor affecting tourism rates in Guam is increase in crime rates scaring off tourists, and it's understandable, especially after the unfortunate murder that happened recently, it makes them feel unsafe and paranoid when they're trying to go on vacation.
Add two reccomendations to "How can you help?"
Some ways to help the tourism rates in Guam is to identify what is selling well with the tourists and what's not so that we know what's bringing them in, and to help tourists feel at home when it comes to hotels and such, while also being able to experience the Guamanian lifestyle.
Which feedback from the Japanese visitor shocked you the most?
"Few Food/Restaurant attractions" surprised me the most because I feel as if there's many different restaurants on the island that services different types of foods.
Which feedback from the Korean visitor shocked you the most?
"Guam itself feels outdated" surprised me the most because it just feels so insulting although it is really true, many things hasn't changed, even Village of Donki was already a common site in Japan before it was added in Guam. There wasn't much else that has been added to Guam since I was born, which explains why Guam could feel outdated.
How do you feel about the images visitors are exposed to from Tumon?
It really disgusts me and makes me feel second hand embarrassment, as it's just plain wrong and ugly, it tarnishes our island's reputation and also our economy. It has a long lasting effect and if something isn't done about this, then we're done for.
What is your reaction to the state of tourism in Guam?
It makes me feel sad, there's some good things about this island, but if the bad things shine through . One bad apple could ruin the bunch, they're just trying to stay safe, and we have to prioritize the tourism industry in Guam.
I had just finished reading the article, "6 of the World's Most Sustainable Hotels", and I was impressed. These hotels aimed to make an impact with their sustainability, while also still trying to make your stay enjoyable. They came up with ways that environmental, social, and economic factors are all balanced responsibly. A lot of the listed hotels made sure to try and conserve water and energy, cleaning up waste, and create an eco-friendly environment each in their own individual ways. That's what makes a hotel sustainable.
One hotel in particular that stood out to me was the "Alila Bangsar" in Kuala Lumpur. It uses tinted windows to block heat, and conserves water by using rainwater for plants on the site. They even have "giving bags" in their rooms for guests to discard their lightly used items and have it distributed to charities instead of just having it be waste. By just reading this article, you can really see the difference between a sustainable hotel and one that's not. Sustainable hotels' eco-friendliness makes the place a lot more welcoming and cleaner than basic hotels. It also makes a positive impact in the world.
LEARN ABOUT YOUR DESTINATION - Learning about the destination you are traveling to will help you appreciate your traveling too more. The history, culture, or environment surrounding the areas you're traveling will help you not only be more educated on the destination, but maybe even excite you about traveling some more.
DON'T LEAVE YOUR GOOD HABITS AT HOME - Treat others how you want them to treat you also applies to places. Treat other places how you'd treat your home. It is important to remain respectful towards the place you are visiting. Keep it in good condition for other people, and maybe even yourself if you ever want to return to the destination.
SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES - Why would you travel to a place with incredible cultural foods such as Japan just to eat some McDonald's? Even trying out traditional clothing or buying local artifacts will make the trip more memorable and educational. It is very important to truly indulge in the culture of your destination, even if it's by food.
LEAVE NO TRACE - Although this mainly goes towards historical places, even the city and your hotel rooms are important to leave clean. It keeps the location beautiful, and won't get you arrested (maybe.)
EDUCATE OTHERS - Not only is it important for you to know about your destination, but also others. Share your experience with others and teach them about the culture. It is important to help people truly understand the privilege they have to step in foreign lands, and they will also help spread the word some more.
TRAVEL IN THE OFF-SEASON - Over-tourism is very much real and can cause serious problems. It's best to not add to the already mass crowd and to instead travel when it's more quiet and empty. Not only will it be better for the destination, but it will also give you a more peaceful vacation.
SUPPORT CONSERVATION EFFORTS - Try to support companies that make an effort to protect the environment. Nowadays, climate change and overpopulation might ruin some natural lands so supporting these companies will help the world become a better place for everybody in the world.
PARTICIPATE IN CULTURAL EVENTS - Don't be afraid to try out cultural events that you are welcome to join. You can really feel like you are a part of the culture by learning about it. It will be very fun and very educational and also makes good use of spare time.
LEARN THE LOCAL LANGUAGE - Same as what was previously mentioned, this is a very difficult task, but may result in you being seriously educated about the culture. You could learn a whole new language, or maybe even learn basic phrases to make traveling easier if you are going to local businesses.
BRING YOUR EXPERIENCES HOME - Continue to do what you did at your destination at home. Encourage your family and friends to join you next time you travel and to do the same things that you have practiced to make the destination and everyone involved have a great and positive experience.
1. I wish to go to Wellington, New Zealand because New Zealand has a strong and interesting culture that will be interesting to learn. The natural beauty is also rich and it has a lot of cool land forms that would be amazing to see. The people there are very passionate about being a person of New Zealand, it's so beautiful to see all of them be united by their culture.
2. New Zealand's most interesting piece of history to me is that it was the first country to grant women the right to vote, which is great. Being inclusive! It is one of the most developed countries in the world and It is even reportedly higher than Australia. It even has great internet speed! New Zealand's currency is called the New Zealand dollar and $1NZD is equivalent to $0.62 USD.
3. As far as I know, there are no direct flights from Guam to New Zealand. Instead, I'd need to book a flight from Guam to Osaka, Japan, which would most likely be with United Airlines Flight 150, which would be a 4 hour flight. From there, I can go from Osaka to Wellington, most likely with either Singapore Airlines or Air New Zealand. The cost for former would be $382, the latter would be around $1,556, adding to a total of $1,938. I would like to stay for just about 5 days. New Zealand also has buses, taxis, trains, and cable cars that can get me around the city!
4. I plan to stay at Pacific View Bed & Breakfast, which is an 8 minute drive from Wellington International Airport that I could easily catch with a cab. The B&B has a 4.8 star rating on Google Maps and is $95 a night, which would be $475 for my 5 day stay. It has outdoor furniture, free wifi, open parking, a good view of the beach, and is close to some landmarks such as the Massey Memorial. The restaurants in Wellington are pretty diverse in culture and can range from Asian to Seafood to Pastries to local. The Crab Shack is a seafood restaurant that caught my interest as it serves mostly seafood and focuses on New Zealandish cuisine. I do focus on eating crab orientated food.
5. The Sky Stadium is a place that I'd love to visit in New Zealand. I'd love to watch a soccer match and especially a rugby match from the best rugby nation in the world. I want to especially see a haka in person, just the passion and energy that radiates from it is something I'd love to experience in real life. The Wellington Museum is another place I'd like to visit so I can learn about the culture and history of New Zealand. Although the country may have been colonized, it is still one of the most culturally strong countries out there, and I'd love to learn more.
1. Who are the providers of infrastructure and transportation in Guam?
The providers are GRTA, the Guam Regional Transit Authority, Guam airport, and Guam bus companies such as Lam Lam Tours Bus Depot, and taxi services such as Hanna Grace taxi service. They offer Guam affordable rides, reliable service, and accessible island-wide transportation service. The government also has GPA and GWA, that provides power and water for Guam's facilities.
2. List 5 major attractions and events for Guam.
Liberation Day Parade
Talofofo Falls
CHamoru Discovery Day
Ypao Beach
Cocos Island
3. List 5 major built facilities in Guam.
Village of Donki
Micronesia Mall
K-Mart
Pacific Island Club
The Guam Museum
4. Describe a method to evaluate our service quality and friendliness in Guam.
Google Reviews is an easy and simple way for people to evaluate people's opinions on place, being able to go as deep as they want in their reviews and to give their service a 1-5 star rating. It's accessible to anyone with a phone as well and the service can reply to the customer's reviews as well!
5. Describe how well do the destination product components integrate together.
Yes and very well so! Transportation takes people to the built facilities. From the built facilities, customers can walk to events from the built facilities. After the events, people can go back to the built facilities and son on!
6. What aspects of the destination product are missing and need to be added to make Guam a preferred destination?
A lot of outdoor destinations simply lack cleanliness. Some may not want to come out because a lot of trash are often lying around. That's pretty much all there is to it!
