It’s important to know basic facts about biology and the human body to keep the body healthy. As a field of science, human biology is complex and mindboggling at times, particularly when intricate processes in the body come to play. Steven Rindner, a bio major, shares in this blog post a few facts about human biology.

It may be basic knowledge, but being reminded that the human body has 12 systems can be helpful. These are the nervous system, endocrine system, cardiovascular system, immune system, integumentary system, muscular system, lymphatic system, respiratory system, reproductive system, urinary system, digestive system, and skeletal system. All 12 systems must work together to ensure that the human body performs well.

Common knowledge dictates that the human body only has five senses. However, there are nine in all that have their own sensory organs or dedicated receptors, notes Steven Rindner, a bio student. The five basic senses are vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. The additional four are balance, temperature, pain, and proprioception, or spatial body awareness (one’s ability to touch a part of their body while their eyes are closed).

The human body’s immune system combats infection by using antibodies to fight off infection by attacking viruses and foreign bacteria, while macrophages (white blood cells) close in and subdue foreign cells or object to avoid disease from spreading. Bio major Steven Rindner considers human biology as one of the most interesting areas of the study as being knowledgeable about it allows a person to take better care of their body.
