Artifact Description:
This is a video my partner and I created using Google Sites and Screencast-o-matic for our Technology in Education class. The purpose of our video was to teach Elementary students how to tell time to the nearest half hour using digital and analog clocks. Our goal was for a student to learn how to tell time without a teacher being present. We created the video and the quiz that goes along with it so that a student could watch the video at home, and then take the quiz to test his or her knowledge.
IPTS Connection:
This video connects to Standard 5 because the standard states "The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning" This video is a perfect example of that because it is not simply a lesson plan that a teacher will give to her classroom full of students, but a video for her students to watch on their own time. Standard 5 also mentions that a competent teacher "knows how to implement effective differentiated instruction through the use of a wide variety of materials, technologies, and resources" (5C). This video is a different method that teachers can use that switches things up and allows the students to move at their own pace and pause the video whenever they need to and move through the examples by themselves. Using this type of lesson plan allows teachers to incorporate a different method for teaching in to their curriculum.
What I learned:
As educators, our job is to continue to grow and to remain students for the rest of our careers'. The day we stop learning is the day we stop educating others. I learned a lot while creating this video with my partner. I learned how difficult it is to create a lesson plan for something as simple as telling time because I had never realized how many different steps go into breaking down a concept. When looking at a clock, we don't think about the hour hand and the minute hand, because we don't have to. We look at the clock, and know the time. However, a child needs those tools to learn and comprehend the idea of time. I am glad I learned that lesson while working on that project because it will be immensely helpful in the future. You might think it is easy to teach children how to do something simple, like addition, because it is easy for us. But that concept is difficult for children to understand and creating curriculum that breaks down those concepts is not always an easy task. I will remember creating this video when I am creating curriculum for my future students.
