In this lab, I learned how the information in the world around me is processed in my mind. I tested speed and accuracy as well as how well I was able to notice patterns in my environment.
This lab relates to the programmatic theme of emotional intelligence as it made me aware of my limitations and educated me on my misconceptions. This will be helpful moving forward in my career path as I can target where I'm weak and highlight areas of strength.
This lab highlighted how different types of stimulus impacted my attention as well as how distraction can impact focus and discrimination of changes in detail.
This lab relates to the programmatic theme of career connections as it reminds me that my focus in the workplace can be impacted by even the smallest distraction. In my desired profession, this distraction could have serious consequences.
This lab was an eye opening continuation from the prior one as it built upon how distractions impact memory. In addition, I learned how the brain remembers different types of input (numbers, letters, words) differently and how mental rotation capacity impacts daily tasks and problem solving.
This lab relates to the programmatic theme of career connections as, being aware of the ways to improve my memory and reduce distraction will make me a better employer and leader.
In this lab, I learned that the ways in which my brain encodes things (encoding specificity) impacts my retrieval. I also learned that encoding, or levels of processing is a complex process and that what I remember is dependent on how my information is encoded. Finally, I learned that memory is a constructive process that is not without its limitations. These limitations put us at risk for false or inaccurate memories.
This lab relates to the programmatic theme of ethics and social justice. Understanding the limitations that our brains have in relation to memory will give me the ability to be mindful of pitfalls and errors that may arise in the world around me. Being educated on this helps me to speak truth where misinformation is shouting - and also be able to effectively stand up for those who may be falsely accused.
In this lab, I learned how mastery of language and the speed in which I process verbal information impacts how I view the world around me. I also learned that this process, while viewed as automatic, is comprehensive and multifaceted.
This lab refers to the programmatic theme of emotional intelligence as it helps me to understand how my unique way of processing things impacts how I see the world...and it helped me to see that every other person in this world also experiences processing uniquely. This was a reminder to always step back and be respectful of how others see and feel about thing as those feelings and thoughts are a result of a combination of unique processing and unique experiences.
In this final lab, I learned that logic can be counterintuitive. Sometimes, what we think is the most logical choice ends up being the wrong choice upon further examination. It is often easier to understand thematic concepts over abstract concepts because we are able to use context and experience when thinking thematically, but sometimes our bias can inadvertently steer us in the wrong direction, so it's important to not only look for things that prove our conclusions but also things that can disprove them. This lab relates to the programmatic theme of emotional intelligence as it taught me that our emotions and experiences drive our decision making behaviors. We are more prone to take risks depending on the impact of the risk or loss and people often overestimate the impact of a negative loss which influences their decision making.
