Becoming is better than being. ~ Carol S. Dweck
Throughout my studies, I have constantly been challenged to evaluate who I am, why I do what I do, and why I feel how I feel. I've examined my behaviors and my biases and have learned to see diverse perspectives in the process. Emotional intelligence is a critical attribute in the workplace. It provides a healthy, stable, growth mindset that allows for respectful and positive collaboration and the willingness to flourish in your knowledge and your vision moving forward.

I found this article about dismantling hate to be extremely thought provoking. It increased my awareness of the power of connection and contact with others who are not like me. By stepping outside of my 3x3 world, I am able to see different perspectives, understand why people think/feel/act the way they do, and see them for who they are and not the labels that they have been given. This helps improve my emotional intelligence and promotes development of healthy relationships.
Prompt Given:
In this milestone, you will examine various definitions of social change identity and the ways in which these definitions align with the attitudes, beliefs, and ideals that reflect your identity. You will revisit the social change initiative that you discuss in this milestone assignment as you complete Project One.
For this activity, you will first research and review five scholarly resources that include varying definitions of social change identity. In an annotated bibliography format, you will summarize and cite the definitions of social change identity from each resource, then respond to the following criteria:
Record and cite five scholarly resources that include varying definitions of social change identity.
Identify three themes that emerged from the researched definitions.
Describe which of the three themes you feel has the greatest personal significance to you and why.
Describe which of the three themes you believe has the greatest societal significance and why.
Describe a theory of personal change that best reflects your character and/or values and explain why. Refer to the Theories of Personal Change document (located in the Module One Reading and Resources area) to justify your response.
Describe how a social change initiative of your choice aligns with your personal ideals.
This assignment helped grow my understanding of the various definitions of social change identity. These articles all had different perspectives, but had similar themes discussing how marginalized groups can have a significant social impact, and how discord is what creates an environment for change. Interaction and impact are also common themes. Social chagne is impacted by interaction (whether it's ingroup, outgroup). People are more likely to engage in social change efforts when they feel they have the ability to make a difference (sense of agency). Sense of agency seemed to be a significant player in social change identity. If people don't feel they have a power to make a difference in the first place, they will never take those first steps towards change and the problem will continue on. It is important for me to help others see the power that they hold within themselves to be a force for change. When people are empowered, not only do they blossom, but they end up becoming the change they wish to see in the world around them.
Prompt Given:
In this milestone, you will reflect upon aspects of your identity using Susan Fiske’s 5 Core Social Motives to prepare you for Project One.
You will apply each of the five core social motives to reflect on your social change identity.
Describe how the motive of belonging contributes to your social change identity.
Describe how the motive of understanding contributes to your social change identity.
Describe how the motive of controlling contributes to your social change identity.
Describe how the motive of enhancing self contributes to your social change identity.
Describe how the motive of trusting contributes to your social change identity.
Describe how your knowledge of the five core social motives can help you to counter the effects of social changes.
Susan Fiskes's 5 Core Social Motives impact our social change identity. Belonging, understanding, controlling, enhancing self, and trusting are all core social motives. This assignment helped me to evaluate and understand what motivates me (and others) towards positive social change. This understanding helps me to be an effective and emotionally intelligent social change agent.
Prompt Given:
Your identity is a diverse collection of the perceptions and experiences that shape the lens through which you see the world. Throughout our development, our identities are in a constant state of flux: snapshots of our attitudes, interests, and aspirations at a given moment in time. As we explore the social themes that matter to us, our identities reflect how we think, how we feel, and who we are, right now. For this project, you will reflect on various psychological and social factors to develop your social change identity.
Using the learning from your Module One and Module Two Milestone assignments, along with the Social Change Identity Vocabulary List PDF, you will address the following rubric criteria to construct your own definition of your social change identity.
Describe the ways in which your personality traits have influenced the development of your social change identity.
Describe the ways in which your lived experiences have influenced the development of your social change identity.
Describe the ways in which your social influences have influenced the development of your social change identity.
Describe the ways in which your willingness to be psychologically vulnerable has influenced the development of your social change identity.
Describe the ways in which resilience, growth mindset, and emotional intelligence have each supported the personal growth that has contributed to the development of your social change identity.
Who we are and how we interact with the world around us is shaped by psychological and societal factors such as experiences, personality, and social influences. Evaluating my personality helps me to see my strengths and weaknesses as well as find ways in which I can grow myself into a better human being. Recognizing that my lived experiences influence the person I am today helps grow my emotional intelligence and be more aware of my responses to the people and situations around me. Having a growth mindset is critical in adapting and adjusting to adversity, obstacles, and change. Being open to new experiences, opportunities to learn from setbacks and failures, and the perseverance to endure through challenges is key in ensuring a healthy social change identity and effective social change agency.
