Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do. ~ Potter Stewart
Throughout my studies, I have found myself digging deep into difficult questions revolving around ethics. Investigating the importance of utilizing ethical data and understanding the power of algorithms helped me to be able to critically think about the information I am taking in and dispersing with those around me. As a leader, I am responsible for the information I put out into this world and it is critical to ensure that I am responsible with my information and the choices that I make.

Prompt Given:
Review the data and sources and highlight the differences.
This item contributed to my learning experience because it showed the stark contrast between a valid research study and the interpretation given in a non-peer reviewed source.
Ethically speaking, we must realize that, despite clear and valid research, if it’s not responsibly handled with care, we are at great risk for people to use the data for their own unethical purposes and that can lead to consequences far beyond their initial intention.
Prompt Given:
What is the impact algorithms can have?
Understanding the impact that algorithms can have and the importance of utilizing them properly is a critical skill to possess.
Algorithms are powerful tools, but they can be destructive ones in the hands of inexperienced or biased individuals. Improper use of algorithms have ethical implications as action usually comes as a result of data collected from the algorithm. If the algorithm is faulty or biased, individuals or groups of individuals can be negatively impacted; alternatively, other populations could have more favorable outcomes than necessary or warranted due to faulty algorithms.
When we look at this topic with a wider lens, the importance of responsible algorithms comes into focus. We should always measure the validity of an algorithm based on fairness, integrity, what and who defines success, accuracy, and the long term implications the algorithm has on the population.
Prompt Given:
Have you ever been torn between patronizing and boycotting a business that operates with socially insensitive ideals that work against your social change objectives? Patronizing that business could lead to feelings of conflict and distress because your behaviors, decisions, or attitude contradicts your personal ideals.
As you have begun to establish and generate your own social change objectives, it is natural to reflect upon your ideals and beliefs that may not always align with how you interact with the world. This assignment will encourage you to reflect on the personal and social factors that guide your ethical decision making.
For this journal activity:
Describe the personal factors that guide your ethical decision making when choosing to support (or not support) a specific cause.
Describe the social factors that guide your ethical decision making when choosing to support (or not support) a specific cause.
Describe one way that you can decrease cognitive dissonance in order to realign your ideals and actions.
Describe one way that you can increase cognitive consonance in order to realign your ideals and actions.
Ethical decision making in your personal and professional life is tantamount. Being aware of the personal and social factors that impact your decision making helps you to ensure that your decisions are made with thorough and careful deliberation. Being cognizant of ways in which you can reduce cognitive dissonance to realign ideas and actions and ways in which you can create cognitive consonance helps keep your choices ethical.
