The STEMentors Newton Classroom program brings our hands-on lessons right to your elementary school! We plan age-appropriate lessons with the teacher/group of teachers whose classroom(s) we are visiting and engage the students through station-based learning. Our lessons have a theme to them and can be tailored to what the students are learning at the time.
Currently, we are working through some transportation issues and are mainly serving the schools on the North side of Newton. Please contact us to inquire about your school.
Each lesson takes about an hour. This includes time for set-up, introductions, 3-5 stations, and lesson closings.
Typically, we visit K-8 classrooms. Our lessons are age-appropriate and individualized for each grade.
We will bring 4-5 mentors for each class we are visiting. We will also bring one club officer per class and our faculty advisor to oversee. We maintain our student-to-mentor ratio of 5:1.
Yes! We are happy to visit a whole grade, but depending on the number of classes, we may recommend that we split them over two days so it is easier to manage. When teaching two classes at once, we generally split our stations over the two rooms and combine the classes so the groups are larger. We maintain our student-to-mentor ratio even with larger groups.
Please contact us to find out more about this.
Activities are station-based and focus on a central science concept or theme, such as static electricity, motion/forces, geology, thermodynamics, the human body, electricity/circuits, and more! We develop our own curriculum throughout the year and adapt it to the needs of your classroom. All stations are hands-on and allow the children to explore. We encourage the children to stretch their brains as we ask them questions such as "Why do you think this happened?" and "What will happen when we do this?" This enables the students to think critically as they learn.
No! The materials for the lesson needed will be provided by STEMentors. We may ask you (the teacher) to provide simple classroom items such as markers, scissors, or paper, but we will never ask you to purchase anything.
We do ask that all children are wearing name tags when we arrive so we can get to know them, but we are able to provide them if necessary.
