The following lessons integrate socio-scientific issues, ethics, media literacy, and computational thinking to deliver meaningful, engaging and active learning experiences for students. I strive to integrate a variety of differentiated learning techniques that cater to a diverse range of learners. The lessons below can be easily modified to suit a virtual or in-person learning environment and include several guiding questions and extensions to aid instructors.
Students learn about the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, gas exchange, and lung capacity.
Students learn about the impact of smoking on human health and society. They explore whether smokers should be denied free health care after considering various factors such as law and ethics.
Students learn about the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system.
Students learn how the media influences food choices and one's overall understanding of healthy eating. They analyse the visual metalanguage used advertisments to convince viewers of making certain food choices. Then, they use this knowledge to create their own advertisement.
Students will navigate the Whitman College Biology Department's Virtual Pig Dissection (VPD) and complete the associated set of questions. Then students will test their knowledge by completing a self-assessment.
