BALANCE IS THE KEY TO EVERYTHING!
I don't understand how one group of people can protest against their own Holocaust and Genocide only to create another Holocaust and Genocide for another group of people?
A "liberal" education, is meant to push students outside their intellectual comfort zone, to take intellectual risks, to risk failure, and then reflect, and fix. In our current standardized system, failure is penalized, yet failures have resulted in some of our greatest achievements
Is it preparing students for life beyond HS to prepare them to estimate the percentage of quartz in a sample of pegmatite? NO.
BUT... I guess my point is... is learning how to use documents and resources to put strategies to use a good skill to have so that they can specialize one day? YES. (but if it doesn't "count", think of how many students will dismiss it.)
WE need to be the ones INTRODUCING EVERYTHING, as they will NOT stumble through it alone. And direct instruction is part of it.
They don't really think about buying countertops when they renovate a kitchen one day, but we can explain why some look black with small crystal sizes, others white...
They don't really think about which side of the property a driveway could be put in to avoid a slope that is too steep or washouts.
They don't really think about why their backyard is always muddy and why the landscapers installed cobbles in a ditch to dry it up.
They don't really think about why Long Island can be compared to the snowbank after the plow truck clears the driveway.
They don't really think about why the wind is blowing from the northeast and what that might mean in the winter months.
They don't really think about why they might avoid a Caribbean vacation in September.
They don't really think about why Polaris doesn't appear to move.
They don't really think about why the Moon looks different, can be seen in the day, or why eclipses don't happen every new and full moon.
You get the point... I could go all night.
