Sarah McGeorge is an emerging costume designer and all around creative, specialising in tactile arts, costumery and traditional crafts. She enjoys exploring new avenues of creative expression, gaining new knowledge and skills along the way. A strong passion for fashion, whimsy and the arts, Sarah has a diverse creative background including qualifications in photography, visual arts, make-up, jewellery smithing, graphic design and more.
During her studies at QUT, completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Technical Production) with a minor in Fashion Communication, Sarah has gained a deeper knowledge of the theatre and has gained practical experience in stage management, space, and costume design; working on productions including Fractured, Unseen Threads, and Bakkhai. Sarah also volunteers at Brisbane Arts Theatre in their wardrobe department, working on productions including The Three Musketeers, Terry Pratchett's The Fifth Elephant, The Snow, and more.
Looking forward, Sarah plans to pursue a career within the costume and wardrobe sphere - to bring texts to life for audiences; bringing the characters and concepts to life in order to create unforgettable experiences in a sustainable way. Additionally she will continue to broaden her experience and knowledge base looking towards adding event management and marketing to her accreditations.
Down The Rabbit Hole
Toile [twahl] noun. An early version of a finished garment, often made of simple fabric and used to test and perfect a design.
A whimsical exploration of past, present and future, Down the Rabbit Hole presents the viewer with a toile - notations, alterations and improvements, marked and waiting to be completed. The train of the dress forms out into a tunnel of possibility, decorated with a collection of trinkets, motifs, and knick-knacks all referencing past courses, productions, and interests; leading to a kaleidoscope of fabric collected from off-cuts and remnants - designed to be deconstructed and used for a future project. A beaded spider forms a web, weaving a history and future together in this amalgamation of learning, experience and knowledge both from QUT and elsewhere.
Drawing from remembered childhood loves; past education and knowledge; and current interests and hobbies - Down the Rabbit Hole invites the viewer into Sarah's unique and whimsical world view, showing an abstract timeline built up over 30 years of experiences and stories. The exhibition explores how a person’s story, both personal and professional, is ever evolving, changing, and improving through multiple iterations as time goes on. All leading to how, going ‘down the rabbit hole’, can lead to new worlds of possibility.
