I am proud to say that I have been a part of the St. Lucy School community for over 40 years. I have had the privilege of teaching at two grade levels. For 19 years, I taught second grade and for 13 years I taught 5th grade. I was the Athletic Director for 23 years, Vice Principal for 13 years and this is my 10th year as Principal. It is a joy to come to school daily and work with children!
I was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts and was raised in West Springfield, Massachusetts. My family moved to California after my 6th grade year. I attended Ida Price and Bret Harte Junior High Schools and Leland High School. My love of school and the desire to be a teacher began when I was in second grade and carried throughout my education. After graduating from high school, I attended Santa Clara University where I received my BA in General Humanities and my multiple subject teaching credential. In 2004, I received a Masters in Educational Administration from SCU.
I believe that being involved adds to the community life of the school. I have been involved in many St. Lucy School activities over the years. I have been the Student Council Moderator, Athletic Director, Vice Principal, altar server coordinator, Curriculum Coordinator, and managed facilities with Mark Hidde.
I look forward to working with parents, teachers and students as we celebrate our 65th year!
Go Lightning!
I taught first grade at Queen of Apostle School from 1997-2016 and taught in the Diocese of San Jose for over 25 years. In 2016, I became the school’s reading resource teacher. I am a graduate from Santa Clara University, and have a Masters in curriculum and instruction. I recently completed training at IMSE, which encompassed Orton-Gillingham’s teaching on Multi-Sensory Education. I incorporate this approach into reading intervention.
My experience enables me to engage students in their work, and to specialize in helping struggling students build their self-confidence. I incorporate technology into my lessons to assess my students’ reading skills and enhance their learning. I was featured as “Teacher of the Year” in an issue of San Jose magazine. I have also enjoyed serving as a mentor to less experienced teachers.
Outside of school, I am a long time volunteer at O’Connor Hospital and I love to cook.
It is hard to believe that I have been a teacher at St. Lucy School for over 25 years. Time flies by when you truly enjoy your work. I am a San Jose native, and graduated with a degree from Santa Clara University and a teaching credential from San Jose State. My first job was teaching 5th grade at Resurrection in Sunnyvale. After four years there, I decided to move here to SLS as the new 3rd grade teacher. I spent the next three years starting a family with my husband Dan, and teaching 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade. I finally settled down, however, in Kindergarten, where I have been teaching ever since.
I have the distinct pleasure of being not only a teacher here at SLS, but also a parent. Both of my children are SLS alumni, and have since graduated from Bellarmine and Presentation and now college. They thoroughly enjoyed their time here, and I think the experience helped me grow as a teacher.
Of course, my role at St. Lucy School has grown over the years. I received my Masters in Educational Administration from Santa Clara and am now a part of the administration team. Still, despite these duties, my true passion is teaching, and I am looking forward to an exciting year with all my new kindergartners.
Thirty years ago, as I was exploring my education and my future, I discovered my commitment to the education of young children. My very deliberate academic path, including undergraduate studies in psychology, sociology, and early childhood education, as well as my graduate studies in the California credential program, confirmed my commitment to a future involved in nurturing young minds.
As a preschool teacher, school age teacher, tutor, and parent, my focus has always been and continues to be centered on the education of children. The vision of creating a Pre-k program has been an ever-present and developing goal of mine and I am delighted to see it come to fruition through the Little Lightning Pre-k program in the warm and thriving Catholic community of St. Lucy School.
My name is Jane Riley, and I am entering my 23rd year of teaching here at St. Lucy School. I am excited to be continuing as an Instructional Aide in Kindergarten. I am also the PE teacher and the Director of the Extended Day Care program (EDC). I have five children, and I am an alumni of St. Lucy School. Outside of work, I enjoy watching my children play sports.
I am pleased to begin my eighth year at Saint Lucy, having moved several years ago from assisting in 3rd Grade and Advancement into the school office . This year will mark twenty two years in Catholic education with the Diocese of San Jose having been an aide and classroom teacher at Saint Cyprian (Catholic Academy) and Resurrection in Sunnyvale, and in resource at SaintCatherine in Morgan Hill.
I have lived in the Bay Area since the 7th grade. I received my undergraduate degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and did my credential coursework at National University in San Jose. When not at school, I enjoy traveling, DIY projects, reading, watching Sharks hockey, and spending time with my family and friends.
Children entering Pre-K must be four years old by 09/01.
Children entering Kindergarten must be five years old by 09/01.
Open House: We hold Open Houses in fall and winter and love to welcome families to campus. Our approach has been slightly modified during the pandemic but we look forward to fully opening our campus this spring.
Campus & Virtual Tours: Register here. We strive to help you learn more about life at St. Lucy School either virtually or on campus. We are excited to share more about our programs and curriculum as well as our amazing Lightning community. A Campus tour, either in person or virtually, is a wonderful opportunity to learn more and ask questions about all areas of St. Lucy School.

Accepted families will receive a tuition contract by email in early spring. Tuition may be paid in full in July to save 2%. Otherwise, it will be divided in 11 monthly installments beginning in July and ending in June. February is a no-tuition month, where the enrollment fee per student for the following year will be collected. ($600).
We are very excited to welcome all of our new Lightning families! Every Spring we share everything you need to know before you begin school in August at the Parent Orientation meeting. We also work to help your child become familiar with St. Lucy School before school begins in August.
