Reading: The adopted Common Core reading program is Journeys, by Houghton Mifflin, which provides opportunities for developing a student’s ability to use various reading strategies and skills to aid in comprehension.
Writing: In fourth grade, an emphasis on vocabulary acquisition, grammar and precise word choice is emphasized to enhance writing. There is a focus on the three types of writing: informative/explanatory, opinion, and narrative writing styles. The Step Up to Writing program is used to focus on developing writing skills necessary in each writing style.
Math: The fourth grade Everyday Math curriculum is fully aligned with Common Core Standards. Our fourth grade math program focuses on strengthening basic multiplication skills, expanding into double-digit multiplication, and mastering long division. Fraction concepts, geometry, and decimals are practiced using hands-on activities to aid student learning. Students also develop multiple strategies for solving word problems.
Science: Our rigorous science curriculum, Stemscopes, is fully aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards. Fourth graders explore the topics of energy, waves, light, plant and animal parts, sense receptors, rock patterns, changing land and natural processes. The program combines digital resources, supplemental print, and hands-on STEM experiences that engage every type of learner. Students attend Science three days a week.
Social Studies: In fourth grade, social studies focuses on the California Missions and the Gold Rush. Field trips to a local mission and the Almaden Quicksilver Museum enhance the curriculum.
Spanish: Students have Spanish class once per week to learn the basic Spanish vocabulary.
Physical Education: The emphasis of P.E. is on body and locomotive movement. Students participate in physical activities twice a week that are enjoyable and challenging. In addition to the curriculum, sportsmanship and teamwork play a significant role in our program.
Art: Students meet weekly with art teacher, Mrs. Horowitz, to create a variety of masterpieces focusing on various art media, art appreciation, and art history.
Music: Students collaborate weekly to learn new songs, sing in harmony and learn vocal techniques.
Technology: Students use Chromebooks on a daily basis for online curriculum in all subject areas. We started using NearPod this year to understand Digital Citizenship. Students begin a self-paced formal typing program, and will learn more advanced word processing skills and beginning multimedia skills.
Religion: Religious instruction is a core academic subject that is integrated throughout all subjects. The adopted curriculum is Christ Our Life by Loyola Press. Religion classes emphasize family life, social justice, and Christian service through the use of scripture and web resources. Gospel values are a central theme. In fourth grade, the focus is on the Beatitudes, Ten Commandments, and how to live as a disciple. Students participate in school masses two or more times a month. The school community also recognizes and celebrates various days of the liturgical calendar.
Service to Others: Fourth graders participate in a variety of service projects throughout the year as a way of learning about Christian values. In the fall students participate in holiday food drives, and in the spring we hold our annual Penny Challenge. This is a friendly competition run by the Student Council which raises funds for charities. There is also a school-wide Service Day each trimester. On this day, every grade participates in some form of community service and reflection.
