This Module is a for a Novice Mid to High, high school class. It will be completed over the course of 2 class sessions, aproximately 3 hours. It is a summative module in a unit which focuses on learning about the family and family relationships in the Middle East. There are two activities in this module which will allow students to demonstrate their ability to understand family relationships from a comedic video by a popular Egyptian Youtube comedian and via writing, reading, speaking, and listening activities.
The comedic video features a mother's sister and her daughter (Suzie) visiting a young, single man (Shaadi)'s family apartment. Shaadi's mother and aunt are very interested in having him marry his cousin Suzie. Cousin Suize is as enthusastic as her mother and aunt for the match. Shaadi is more interested in escaping the house to go play PlayStation or drink coffee at the local ahwa with his friends. Forced by his father to appropriately greet the guests (his cousin Suzie and her mother), Shaadi grudgingly politely greets them and then escapes to his room only to be followed by cousin Suzie. Suzie forces her way into Shaadi's bedroom room and esentially entraps Shaadi by getting caught alone with him by Shaadi's father. Angered and distrusting of his son's actions, Shaadi's father insists that Shaadi and Suzie marry much to the delight of Shaadi's mother and aunt. In the end it proves to all be a bad dream and Shaadi wakes up from his nightmare repeating to himself, " I will not marry" to find his mother and father staring at him. Worried by Shaadi's declaration that he will not marry, his parents immediately declare their intent to set him up with an eligiable girl.
The is a humerous exageration of common issues regarding marriage and family relationships in Egypt. The parents are shown threatening to physically discipline a university aged student. The university aged student is shown to be living with his parents, which is the norm. Children to not normally move out of the family home until marriage. Cousin marriage is common, prefered by both men and women in some cases, and women in the family are very involved in matchmaking. It is not socially acceptable for unmarried men and women should not be alone together before marriage in a private space. Well to do families will often offer financial support for a young couple, particularly if it is a family match, so couples marry younger than in the US and may be slightly immature. Marriage is jokingly seen by young men as the end of their freedom.
