Essentially these "trips" involve using 360 images from websites and video conferencing with a person in the target country who will explain the images and respond to student questions about the images. The explanation can be in the target language for a foreign language class or in English for a social studies class. See the Prezi presentation for full details and a recorded example of a live virtual fieldtrip to the old city of Sana'a in Yemen.
Start with multiple 360 images of mariachi in different settings and a live, interactive guide.
Follow up with a 360 video to hear the music and see the what mariachi sound like. The 360 video also allows students to control what they see.
A regular video of mariachi and Jarabe dancers to show the relationship between music and dance.
Learning to dance is a great way to practice vocabulary for numbers, directions, speed and more. It is also fun and will give students a real apreciation for the music since they must move in time to it. A fun cultural comparision for mariachi music is to German polka music.
Learn the lyrics to a mariachi song and try to sing along or for the musically inclined class use iPad instrument apps to play the tune (chords, sheet music) or create mariachi music in Garage Band on a computer or iPad and share the creations with the class.
Using cornhusks, try to make dolls in the shape of jarabe dancers. This is a great activity for younger students but beware making a good looking doll is not easy. Students will walk away with a new apreciation for the artisans who make these dolls.
