This module is part of a unit which is dedicated to learning about the institution of the family accross the Arabic speaking world. In pervious modules, students learned about different family structures in the Middle East, and how the houses where people live reflect the family structures and gender separation practices. This module explores the history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the role that family relationships and structure (product) played in the creation of the kingdom, as well as the kingdoms of Iraq and Jordan, the role that family relationships currently play in today's governance of Saudi Arabia (practices), as well as different view points regarding this state of affairs (perspectives).
This module is based on the IMAGE model as presented in the book Enacting the Work of Language Instruction: High-Leverage Teaching Pratices.
Images and Observation
Analyzing different information
Generating hyothesis about cultural perspectives
Exploring perspectives and reflecting further
In this module students, in grades 9-12 who are at the ACTFL novice mid-high proficiency levels, will look at the images in the Pic-Collage and make factual observations about who the people in the pictures are. They will then use this information to analyze the Pic-Collage as a whole and generate hypotheses regarding the connections that the pictures, events and people depicted have to each other. Through the Saudi monarchy's sucession they will continue to explore different family structures while also learning about the history of Saudi Arabia, its political system and tribalism as well as the Ottoman Empire, World War I and the role of the British in the early 20th century Middle East. Students will also discuss the role that polygamy played in unifying what is now the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, into one country during, the early 20th century. Finally students will explore and reflect via in class discussion on how different family structures (monogamy, polygamy, matriarchal, patriarchal...) serve the needs of various societies, why societies choose these structures, the social impacts that these structures have on the societies as a whole, and support and opposition for this system of governance within Saudi Arabia today.
COMMUNICATION
Interpersonal Communication (Activity # 1) - Students will speak, answer questions verbally and use the internet during class to research in Arabic and English facts and connections about the images by in the Pic-Collage . Students will be able to ask and answer simple questions regarding who, what, where, when and why. Students will practice forming basic nominal sentences, using correct human and non human plurals and agreement rules to share their findings with the class as the class as a whole works to decode the Pic-Collage via teacher guided discussion
Presentational Speaking & Writing (Activities # 2 and #3) - Students will work together to make a collective presentation about the Pic-Colage using Jamboard. Individual students will present to the class one Arab monarchy/or presidential monarchy, its origins, family tree, and connection to the country it rules while their classmates engage in Interpretive Listening to determine which country's monarchy is being described.

Activity # 1: Pic-Collage
Activity # 1 (Interpersonal). Teacher will use targeted, simple questions to help students identify the people, events and places in each image in the Pic-Collage (left). Students will search on Google for answers and will collaborate verbally to answer the teacher's questions.
Activity # 2 (Interpersonal, Presentational). Students will collectively make a presentation using Jamboard by writing descriptions by the photos describing their signifigance and how they fit together. The presentation will include a information about how family relationships have impacted recent politics in KSA, and Ibn Saud's use of polygamous marriage to unite disparate tribes into a modern nation state. Additionally, they will discuss verbally in class the pros and cons of such a family structure in light of the role it has played politically in creating a unified, modern state vs. the potential health consequences of polygamous and consanginous marriage, since it is now common for the decendents of the founder to intermarry. Sample Jamboard (in English). The discussion will also cover why the current Crown Prince is controversial, and the reactions of different demographics within the kingdom to his Vision 2030 policy intiatives (anti-corruption drive, war with Yemen, liberalizing the kingdom via tourism and movie theaters...).
Activity # 3 (Presentational, Interpretive). At home, each student will individually research an Arab monarchy and prepare a presentation about that monarchy. Later in the week students will present their presentations to their class. Their classmates must guess which monarchy is being presented. Sample Presentation
