February 2018: Carnaval is a major celebration in the Islas Canarias, Spain. It's the same holiday as the New Orleans Mardi Gras celebration. In the Canarias, MURGAS are groups of people who get together to create a song, dance, skit to present during Carnaval. There are competitions amongst the different murgas. POR UN CARNAVAL LIMPIO is a song created by the murga "Chirimurga del Timple" and it's a parody of Despacito, a hit song of 2017. It's a song to remind you to deposit (De-po-sito) your trash in the proper container so everyone enjoys a clean Carnaval. It was popular in my classes.

January 2018: We watched this Penguin video in class. It's a children's song in Basque, a language of northern Spain. (and parts of southern France) Euskara is the word for Basque, in the Basque language. Euskara is NOT a romance language and does not have the same linguistic history as Spanish so it sounds very different.

November 2017: The Latin Grammy Awards are held every November in Las Vegas. This year Luis Pescetti was nominated in the Children's Music category. He's a musician from Argentina and he didn't win this year but this songs are appropriate and very easy for beginning language students. The 8th graders are now learning one of Pescetti's songs, Bale, Pate, Zum, and then they will visit the elementary students to teach them the rhyme.

October 13, 2017: Internacionales is a new song by Bomba Estéreo*, a popular group from Colombia. You should be able to understand quite a few Spanish words. (Hint: baila, soy, americano). This song speaks to the international mixture of people and although different, we are also the same. "Y aunque somos diferentes a la vez somos iguales".

Lin-Manuel Miranda, composer and playwright of HAMILTON fame, has just released a new Spanish song entitled, "Almost Like Praying". All proceeds from his new song will be donated to the Hispanic Federation's Hurricane Relief Fund. He enlisted an incredible group of Latino artists to collaborate with him. His lyrics include all seventy-eight towns of Puerto Rico. Can you pick out the names of any of the towns? This El Mundo article has the lyrics in Spanish and English.

Marzo 2018: We just finished our Manía Musical Marzo (March Musical Madness), in 7th & 8th grade Spanish classes. Sofía, por Álvaro Soler, won our 2018 bracket! We started with 16 songs at the beginning of March and finished up the winner on March 29, 2018.

Soler just released a new song, La Cintura, two days ago (March 29, 2018) and it's already very popular on social media sites. Maybe it will be in the 2019 bracket???
