SENSORIAL: A Child’s First Experience with Mathematics
Dr. Maria Montessori created the Sensorial materials to serve as a child's first concrete experience with mathematical thinking. Each lesson is carefully constructed around the base ten system, with brightly coloured and beautifully crafted materials that naturally invite exploration and repetition.
Through early sensorial works like the Pink Tower, Brown Stair, Red Rods, and Color Boxes I, II, and III, your child begins developing a deep, internal sense of order, sequencing, gradation, and comparison—all of which are foundational to higher-level mathematical thinking.
These early sensorial experiences lay the groundwork for the abstract math concepts your child will later encounter in the Primary classroom. Each lesson also includes rich, precise vocabulary, supporting language development alongside cognitive growth.
Dr. Montessori understood that the young child is capable of tremendous progress when given the proper tools, environment, and gentle guidance. The Sensorial curriculum is the beginning of that journey—where learning feels joyful, meaningful, and full of wonder.
