PRACTICAL LIFE: The Foundation of Montessori Learning 

The area known as Practical Life is the foundation upon which all other areas of the Montessori learning environment are built. At Sprouts, we deeply value these lessons and provide a rich and abundant array of resources to support each child’s development.

Practical Life offers a wide variety of enticing, hands-on activities:

• Handwashing

• Table scrubbing

• Whisking bubbles

• Cleaning up spills

• Pouring and spooning

• Glass polishing

All materials are child-sized, safe, and non-toxic—designed to invite the child into purposeful, real-world work. The opportunities for growth in this area are truly boundless.

You might ask, "Why are these lessons so important?"
The answer is simple: through these seemingly small tasks, children develop grace and courtesy, care of self, and care of their environment. In doing so, they also begin to refine both gross and fine motor skills, building strength and control that supports all future learning.
