The High Achievers Program supports the Afterschool Alliance's 2025 Lights On Afterschool. We facilitated a preparatory art activity whereby each participant constructed a unique light bulb. We will celebrate by a physical activity and a S.T.E.A.M. activity facilitated by the GCSU Academic Outreach team on GCSU's East Campus (Lake Laurel).
Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and generates media coverage across the country each year.
The Afterschool Alliance organizes Lights On Afterschool to draw attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things—such as science, community service, robotics, Tae Kwon Do, and poetry—and discover new skills. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality afterschool programs.
The GC High Achievers Program celebrated the Afterschool Alliance's 2025 Lights On Afterschool celebration. The premise of the celebration was to bring awareness about the need for quality afterschool programs. The GCSU Academic Outreach team facilitated the activities at GCSU East Campus (Lake Laurel). The group experienced physical and mental health from walking the nature trail and S.T.E.A.M. activities by skimming the water and capturing dragonfly larvae, leeches, minnows, spiders, mayflies, snails, insect egg sacks, and water mites. All were examined under a microscope.

The High Achievers engage in a mental health activity facilitated by our GCSU student volunteer, Ms. Izzy Galysh. The lesson was titled "Positive Thinking, Positive Action".
Mr. Jeremy Nobles, GCSU Associate Director of Public Safety & Emergency Manager, and Dr. Michael Hejazi, GCSU Director of Environmental Health, Safety and Fire Safety, facility the session with the program participants. They delivered a presentation to explain various types severe weather such as, tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, fire, and heat emergencies. The also shared tips, such as "shelter in place" and "evacuation", and directions on actions to be taken in each of those severe weather situations. They also shared information regarding the GCSU alarm systems. The GCSU emergency notification system, Rave Guardian, was made available through the QR Code. The sharing of this information was meant to inform the program participants on how to be leaders in case they find themselves and their families in one of those emergency situations.
The HAP participated in the "Egg Shell Experiment and Human Health". Egg shells and tooth enamel both are mainly calcium. They are similarly hard, mineral structures that can be damaged by acid. The participants were split up into groups of 3 to 4 participants and each group was given a liquid, an egg, a cup, and tinfoil or a lid cover. There was a different liquid for each group: Coca-Cola, Sprite, Hydrogen Peroxide, Isopropyl Alcohol, Lemonade + lemon, Sweet Tea, Red Bull, and instant coffee. One member of the group was tasked with putting the materials together and doing the egg drop; another member was in charge of researching the effects of the liquid on calcium carbonate (the thing that egg shells are made of), another member wrote down what they thought was gonna happen to the egg and to our teeth and bones since they both primarily contain calcium. After each group collected research and did the egg drop, one member from each group presented their findings to the rest of the group and told us their predictions on what they thought was gonna happen to the egg as well as what their liquid does to our teeth and bones. The plan was to let the eggs soak for a week and then examine the effects of the various liquids on the shells.
The High Achievers took a tour of the Fouts Brother facility in Milledgeville, GA.
