General Education Collaboration

Effective Collaboration & Communication Is The Key To Student Success!

Collaborate & Communicate

Collaboration between special education and general education teachers is not always easy, however it is essential and is not always as difficult of a task as it may seem. There are definitely obstacles that can get in the way of effective collaboration such as lack of common planning time, incompatible daily schedules, and even the physical separation between classroom environments. As a special educator it is important to communicate with general education teachers and develop a plan that best supports your students.

Below are some strategies that may help to facilitate effective collaboration between yourself and your colleagues:

  • Lesson plan together (either in person, by phone, through e-mail, or even FaceTime).

  • Set specific times during the week to communicate. If it is in your calendar you are more likely to do it.

  • Listening is the key to effective collaboration.

  • Do not act like "the boss", you are equal partners.

  • Clearly define responsibilities.

  • You both are in this together! Remember you are both working toward the same end goal.

  • Work together to assess student progress and learning.

  • Develop mutual TRUST and RESPECT.
