After a scenic drive, we boarded a small cog train bound for our lunch stop: a local trout farm's restaurant, Magic River Restaurant & Grill, tucked high in the hills. The route wound through a dramatic canyon, each turn revealing another breathtaking view. Along the way, we passed cheerful hikers, paused to pick up two railroad workers, and shared smiles over the sight of a few four-hooved locals grazing near and on the tracks—a highlight of the hour-long ride for everyone aboard.
Stepping into the train station was like traveling back to my childhood: a charming jumble of old-world architecture and quirky surprises, including machines dispensing temporary tattoos and bouncy balls. It is the kind of place where the past feels alive, and even the simplest things can spark a smile.
Below: The highlight of our cog train ride was the goats!
Above: The gas stations were a next level experience! An entire glass case of different types of baklava? It was delight for the eyes and a number purchased a piece for the road.
By the time we reached the trout farm, it felt less like transportation and more like a journey through Greece’s living landscape—a blend of rugged beauty, chance encounters, and simple, joyful moments along the way. I taught a number of tour members how to debone a fish and we enjoyed the comradery while eating a very healthy lunch.
We ended the day at the peaceful Maniatis Mountain Resort—complete with one of the most comfortable beds of the trip and a view that took my breath away. As the sun dipped behind the hills, our group gathered for dinner, sharing stories, laughter, and reflections on all we had seen so far.
Mid-conversation, the world suddenly felt delightfully small. A fellow traveler and I discovered that we went to the same school at different times and even shared mutual friends through our churches back home. Thousands of miles from where our lives began, we found an unexpected thread of connection—a gentle reminder that travel not only opens the world, but sometimes circles it right back to you.
