Shallow root growth with fungi
Soil 'developing' deeper as roots grow
Various clay soils, no horizons
Most of our understanding of early soil derives from looking at what else was going on, as few of us are looking for soil. The diagram from Royal Society looking at the origins of mycorrhiza (Strullu-Derrien et al., 2018) with plants growing and fungi forming is perhaps best there is to date. According to this schematic diagram, 'Ground cover' preceded 'developed soil' which started about 400 mya and became deeper over next 100 my.
The soil became a distinct 'entity' as described in Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth
"A fertile soil transmits forces. Originally, it was the only material on Earth that could hold water. It therefore became the theatre where water, earth, and air could interact, where the earth could express itself in the endless variety of organic life.”
The theatre puts on a great show for next 300million years....
