Welcome to this Open Educational Resource on Social Psychology. Social Psychology refers to the branch of psychology which is concerned with how people interact with and think about others. Like all psychology branches, there is considerable overlap and conversation with the other branches. For example, what does our brain do in different social situations? Social psychologists would collaborate with neuroscientists and biological psychologists. How do children learn about social categories? Social psychologists would collaborate with developmental psychologists. How do we organize our categories of social categories such as race and gender? Social psychologists would collaborate with cognitive psychologists. The possibilities are endless and it’s my hope that this course helps you see how Social Psychology is connected to many other different fields.
This particular resource explores Social Psychology through the lens of travel. Humans have been traveling for as long as we have been living in groups! It’s one of the most common ways we find ourselves interacting with groups of people beyond our typical day-to-day group. Travel can affect you even if you don’t do the traveling yourself - when people travel to your location, or you watch travel influencers on social media. It is my hope that this OER will be combined with rich Open Pedagogy assignments that allow my students (and others beyond my classroom!) to relate concepts from Social Psychology to their own experiences and that this resource can be a living, breathing collection of our experiences.

Some of her favorite past travel destinations include Instanbul (Turkey), Bath (England), Edinburgh (Scotland), Kyoto (Japan), Uluwatu (Indonesia), and Brisbane (Australia). Her travel bucket list includes Crete and Naxos (Greece), Cairns (Australia), and pretty much anywhere in Aotearoa (New Zealand). Dr. Biddle holds a PhD in Developmental Psychology having focused on preschoolers’ social-cognitive development through interactions with their parents and media. She has been active in the Open Education community, with a special interest in how open pedagogy can help diversify the field of Psychology.
