Wondering where the funds we raised are going towards? Below are some of things we help with at the school.
On June 20, the grade 5 students participated in an online presentation (including question and answer period) by Saleema Noon around body science and sexual health education. Parents of the grade 5 students were also invited to an online presentation on June 18 to help prepare them for conversations with their children.

Smiling Creek Elementary
Our amazing parents Crystal McVeigh and Stacey Stephens organized a few things around the school today to show how much we appreciate the wonderful staff at Smiling Creek Elementary, including notes from students on classroom doors, staff room treats, cupcakes, personalized gifts and White Spot truck lunch. It was amazing to have the White Spot truck at the school for some delicious hot lunch for the staff. Thank you also to Li Shia Jamieson for making the delicious individually wrapped cupcakes for the staff.
Here are some feedback we got from the staff:
The Rocky Point ice cream truck was a smashing success yesterday. The students were over the moon with such an awesome sweet treat! Thanks PAC!
Earlier this morning we had a spirit assembly on the field. It was so nice to see the entire school together in one place without it being an evacuation drill!! We were able to say goodbye to our grade 5’s, cheered on Div. 3 doing a dance and then had an epic dance off!
Our students have been super troopers throughout this school year and we as a staff cannot say enough about how well they have adjusted
Ross Jacobsen
Principal

Dear Smiling Creek PAC, I wanted to express my sincere gratitude for making us teachers here at Smiling Creek feel so incredibly loved today. You went above and beyond in spoiling us and we could really feel the love and appreciation. To be greeted by the cupcake notes on my door this morning brought tears to my eyes. This year has been challenging for everyone in different ways and this small act of kindness truly makes all the difference. Then, to enter the staffroom filled with all the thoughtful baskets of treats - I was blown away. Your thoughtfulness gave me that extra pep in my step this morning. By the time lunch arrived and we were greeted by the White Spot truck and your amazing personalized gifts - I was just speechless at that point - all the details and personalized touches were just *WOW*. I really don't have the words to express to you how much this means to me and I'm sure the entire staff would echo these sentiments. I feel so fortunate everyday to be a part of this school community -- I can say with all the confidence in the world that our Smiling Creek PAC is the best there is. Thank you for all your enthusiasm and positivity during this challenging year. Thank you for finding creative ways to ensure that our students still receive enriching experiences during this unusual time and thank you for going the extra mile to support teachers and all school staff this year. You guys are phenomenal, incredible, amazing, supportive, thoughtful, caring -- the list could go on. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for all the time, effort and love you gave to make today happen. You brightened my DAY...my WEEK...my MONTH...my YEAR with all the love today!!
We are so lucky to have you. Thank you so so much.
Krystle Kwan
Music Teacher
I wanted to drop a note to say thank you so much for everything yesterday. It has been a particularly tough week knowing we will be losing some of the awesome teachers that have been here since the beginning, and yesterday there were smiles everywhere! The support the PAC provides at this school is amazing.
I put the key in the learning common door yesterday morning, and my eye caught this little pink cupcake note. Then I realized my door was covered. I must tell you that by the time I read all the way around I was a little teary. I think I have changed how things have been working in the LC this year at least 4 times and am so glad the students still love to come here. It warms my heart. I didn't think that could be beat, but then I moved to the staffroom, and warmed my stomach (and heart again). Though I ddi leave enough room for the fantastic lunch. What a treat.
I know many PAC members were involved in making yesterday happen for us all. Thank you to all of you. The amazing little touches from someone who is clearly skilled at using their Cricut, and the way everything was so carefully prepared and wrapped in this crazy Covid time, really shows how much you care. A special thank you to Crystal, Stacey and Stacy.
Looking forward to next year when we can hopefully see you all in person.

PAC gave $250 per classroom to fund a variety of class experiences (virtual field trip, hands on activities) to be used by the teachers' discretion:
Mr. Hart (div 2) and Ms. Shafazand (div 3) reserved a Project of Heart session for the students to learn about the Legacy of Indian Residential school in Canada. They then design tiles that they made into necklaces in honour of the survivors and for the children who never returned from Indian Residential Schools.
Mr. Miyanaga (div 6) bought supplies including foam board, plywood, cords and others for his students to learn more about long houses and build longhouse models.
Ms. Bonnet (div 1) and Mr. Hart (div 4) ordered Coast Salish Owl Weaving with Dawn Marks for their students to learn about first nation artwork.
Ms. Richardson (div 5) booked a virtual science workshop through Unique Minds. The hands on workshop allowed students to perform science experiments themselves.
Ms. L. Burton (division 9) and Ms. Gushue (division 11) booked the Collection Discovery outreach workshops with the Burnaby Art Gallery for their students to explore handmade prints by First Nation artists. The workshop also include individual art kits for students to make which are inspired by their connection with the environment and explore how different mediums work together.
Ms. Klassen (division 19) and Ms. Leong (division 10) booked a virtual class from Science World learning about forces and Ms. Gushue (division 11) booked a virtual class learning about animals.
Ms. Leong (div 10), Ms. Stephens (div 12), Ms. Wallsmith (div 13), Ms. T. Burton (div 15), Ms. Simonson (div 16) and Ms. Klassen (div 19) purchased live butterfly larvae for their classes to watch butterflies grown from larvae.
Ms. Koh (division 7) and Ms. L. Burton (division 9) booked virtual field trips for their classes to learn more about dinosaurs and to take a virtual tour of the Royal Tyrrell Museum.
Ms. Leighs (Division 8) and Ms. Pion (Division 18) have opted to get supplies and rent duck incubators so that their classes can learn about how ducks are hatched. (http://eggucation.com/)
Ms. Richardson (Division 5), Ms. Koh (Division 7) and Ms. Gushue (Division 11) ordered supplies to let their students create gingerbread houses before the winter break.
