The main entrances to Hakodate are Hakodate Airport and Shin-Hakodate Hokuto Station on the Hokkaido Shinkansen Line.
The opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen between Shin-Aomori and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in 2008, more than 40 years after its planning, has greatly reduced travel time by train.
In addition, Hakodate Airport now serves one international and six domestic destinations and routes with direct flights. Of the domestic routes, three are to destinations outside of Hokkaido.
*Some routes may be reduced or cancelled due to the impact of the new coronavirus. Please check the official websites of each airline for the latest information.

Hakodate City Trams are streetcars that run on tracks on the same road as automobiles. Those who are not used to riding the tram may ask, "Where do I get on the tram?”, "How do I pay?", “Where are the stations?”, “What are the special signals for streetcars?”. Therefore, we have compiled the basics of how to ride a city tram. By the way, when locals say "train," they are referring to the tram.
There are two tram lines in operation. Either one will take you to major tourist destinations such as Yunokawa Onsen, Goryokaku Park, Hakodate Station, the morning market, and the Mt. Hakodate ropeway. However, if you wish to go beyond the Jujigai station, please note that the line is divided into different lines which have different destinations. Both lines run every 7 to 14 minutes during the day.
1 Boarding through the center door of a two-car tram
2 (Cash) Take a numbered ticket
(IC card) Touch the boarding reader without taking a numbered ticket
(Smartphone ticket DohNa!) No need to take a numbered ticket and no need to touch the reader.
3 When the announcement of the tram says the stop where you want to get off is approaching, press the "getting off" button.
4 Check the fare on the front display of the tram, indicated under the number of your numbered ticket.
*The fare box does not return your change. If you do not have coins, exchange them at the exchange machine in the car ahead of time. Only 1,000-yen bills are accepted at the exchange machines.
5 (Cash) Place the numbered ticket in the fee box and insert coins of the amount indicated.
(IC card) Touch the "Getting off" reader.
(Smartphone ticket Dohna!) Show the screen of your smartphone to the tram attendant.
Unlike bus stops, tram stops are located in the middle of the road (where there is a median strip). It is dangerous to cross the road, so please be sure to cross the road at the pedestrian crossing. Also, the city trams are not referred to as going up or down. Check the destination as indicated by the lights at the stops or on the front of the tram.
If you are driving a car, pay attention to the tram-only signals. The yellow arrows below the regular green, red, and blue traffic signals are dedicated tram signals. Cars should not proceed when yellow arrows are displayed. Also, the red “X” markers are for trams only, so cars are allowed to proceed.
There are other precautions, so please check before renting a car. (For Drivers | Hakodate City and Travel Hakodate web page)
