Online forms are a convenient tool to help teachers collect and analyze student data. Online forms often have features that will auto-grade student assessments so that teachers can save time and go straight into analyzing the data they have collected from their students. Many popular form sites are Google Forms, Survey Monkey, and Kahoot.
Another useful site is JotForm. JotForm has many useful tools for teachers. JotForm can be used to collect information from parents and students as well as to assess students. This tool can help teachers organize information about students and their families. For example, teachers could gather information on student’s interests and learning preferences in order to help plan for differentiation. Teachers could also create anonymous forms where students ask questions or leave feedback on the class. Students can use forms for research as well, collecting information and data on opinions and preferences of their classmates. Students could also use form to collect and organize data from a STEM project. For example, recording the date, time, temperature, and weather when learning about climate and seasons. This meets ISTE for Students 5b Students collect data or identify relevant data sets, use digital tools to analyze them, and represent data in various ways to facilitate problem-solving and decision-making.
JotForm can also be used to collect signatures for field trips and club permission slips. Teachers can use JotForm to create quizzes and collect homework. On their YouTube channel, JotForm has many great ideas to help teachers get started. I like to use forms to keep track of parent communication. I have inputs for student names, form of communication, date, and what was communicated.
Using online tools is beneficial for receiving quick responses from students, like multiple choice or fill in the blank questions. Typically, these questions only cover the first level of Bloom’s taxonomy. Teachers can collect longer answers, but they will have to read and analyze the answers themselves, rather than using the auto-grade features. It can be difficult to collect answers for certain subjects in online forms, like math where you want to understand the students’ thinking and reasoning. However, when you want to collect information on student’s basic understanding of a topic online forms are a great tool.
