Welcome to the Sindow Genetics Guide. Below is all the genetic, how to breed, and how to design each gene’s information. Remember, Sindows are a made up species with genetics based in real life genetics, so not all this information will be exactly like real life.
Genetics Basics:
If you’re new to genetics, please read through the terms below to help you understand what’s going on in the gene guides themselves! If you understand genetics, then keep on scrolling down to the guides!
Geno: It's a shortened way to say genetic code. The geno is the makeup of your Sindows coloring and is important to sort of have an understanding of so you don't breed two Sindows and get offspring that you don't like. You can find your Sindows geno on it's import sheet right next to where it says Geno:
ex:
Geno: ee cc Rr Dd ss nCr
- each of these pairing of letters stands for something. They either shut off or turn on the gene to make your Sindow a certain color.
Pheno: It's a shorted way to say phonetic code, which is literally what your Sindow looks like. Like palomino or black while the geno is a representation of it. ee cc Rr Dd ss nCr = Smokey red and Ee cc rr Dd ss = Black.
Allele: These are the letters used in the genetic code. One letter is an allele. Like the allele for black is E.
Homozygous: This refers to the geno when two alleles are the same. (EE, ee)
Heterozygous: This refers to the geno when two alleles are different. (Ee)
Dominant: A dominant gene is as it says. It will be dominant over other genes meaning it will show in the Sindows coat most of the time. As E is dominant to e. The dominant gene is the capital letter.
Recessive: Truly recessive genes are rarer, meaning that they will show over the dominant gene if the situation is right. Recessive genes are always denoted with a lowercase letter. e is recessive to E.
n: You may see an n in front of some of the genetic abbreviations. When I was first looking at genetics, I had no idea what the n meant so I thought I'd include it here. The 'n' is simply a shorter abbreviation of a heterozygous gene. So, instead of Rnrn (roan), you'd use nRn. The n is not used to refer to heterozygosity in the three building blocks below. They will always have both alleles present.
Carry/Carrying: When you see that your Sindow is carrying a gene, it means that the gene needs to be homozygous recessive to show OR it does not have the right base color to show. So for example, Pearl is a homozygous recessive gene, meaning it needs to copies to show. Prlprl is showing pearl, nprl is carrying pearl. Some genes need the right base color to show. Commonly you will see a Sindow carrying a type of saturation. For example, Sapphire can only show on a black base, so if you have Sapphire present, but on a Chocolate base, the Sindow will carry Sapphire.
General Information:
Coat Lengths and Pass Down Rates
Base Nuances:
Base nuances are small design additives that you can do to make your Sindow a little more unique!
The Base Geno:
The base geno consists of the genes that will make your Sindow the base color that it is. Every Sindow will have these base gens in their geno. All other modifiers, markings, and white markings will be added onto the base geno.
Modifiers:
Modifiers are genes that modify the base geno’s appearance. They are added onto to the base geno, so if your Sindow does not have a modifier, it will not show in the geno! The only exception to this is a carried gene. More than one modifier can show on a Sindow.
Common Modifiers:
Uncommon Modifiers:
Rare Modifiers:
Tortoiseshell - nTort/TortTort
Very Rare Modifiers:
Modifier Mutations
These are mutations of the modifiers. They may be the same letters, but since they can only affect the gene in the parentheses next to it, it won’t matter if they are the same letters. These modifiers are listed in the base genes they derive from.
All are located in the journal above, their design guides are within the base gene they are apart of or linked separately below-
Witch’s Stockings (Double Socks) - w
Gene Design Extras
These are helpful extra bits of information for designing more than one dilution or modifier on one Sindow.
Lynx Point (Dun + Tabby/Tortie)
Markings:
Markings go over top of Modifiers unless otherwise stated in the modifiers guide. A Sindow does not have to have a marking, if it has one, only one marking will show. They will only be passed down one at a time.
PLEASE READ THROUGH THE MARKING GUIDE FIRST
Common Markings:
Uncommon Markings:
Rare Markings:
Very Rare Markings:
Cover Genes
Cover genes are different from Modifiers and Markings as they will cover all other genes on the body, except white markings. Mutations will show over or affect Cover genes. Cover genes will mimic real life animal coat, scale, skin, or feather patterns.
Cover Gene Info and Pass Down Rate
White Markings
White markings go over ALL genes, including mutations unless otherwise stated.
Common White Markings
Uncommon White Markings
Rare White Markings
Very Rare White Markings
White Marking Modifiers
White marking modifiers will only affect certain genes or just white markings in general. They may be the same letters, but since they can only affect the gene in the parentheses next to it, it won’t matter if they are the same letters.
The genes themselves and how they look are in the base genes journal -
Acid (tobiano) - a
Holiday Genes
These genes are special holiday genes that are only available and can only be bred during certain months! They are listed separately from the other genes and have their own modifiers, markings, and white markings that can interact with the other genes.
- Since they only pass during a certain time period, they all have the common pass rate -
Homozygous = 100% pass rate
Heterozygous = 50% pass rate
If a holiday gene serum item is present their pass rarity turns to rare pass rates, as the item allows them to be passed outside their special month.

Below are the Design Add-on info and Appearance Change Lab. You can access these easily with the table of contest above!
There are FREE add-ons and ones you need items for.
When you are designing your Sindow, you may add ONE of these things to your Sindow for free without needing a special item! The things below are considered design add ons
- Small scars
- small accessories
- small fur dye marks
The image shows the MAX size for scars/dye marks and Accessories. Click the image link to get a close up.
- These are meant to be small things that you can add to your Sindow to make them unique without having to worry about needing a special item.
- Add-ons can go anywhere on your Sindow!
- If you do not have an add-on on your Sindow now, but would like one, you can update them at any time!
- If you want more than one add on, let's say scars and an accessory, you must have an item for the second add-on. What you need is listed below in the 'when do I need an item' section.
- SCARS must be a natural skin color. (browns, pinks, and grays) They can be any shape (even unnatural shapes) as long as they are natural colors.
- ACCESSORIES cannot be larger than the purple area above IF you want them to show on the import! You may design all the accessories you want for your Sindow for free and draw them with it at any time, but only small ones can be shown on the import, as the point of the import is to clearly show the Sindow and it's markings.
- ACCESSORIES can be anything you can think of! You are allowed to erase the import lines where your accessory crosses them.
- Accessories are not meant to cover the whole import, this is why I'm only allowing small accessories to be added. If you want large accessories, you can add them and make a secondary import image to link in your Sindows import sheet info, log, or tracker journal without the need of any items.
- DYE MARKS can be any color and any shape. (lets keep it appropriate though folks) Free Dye Marks can also be your stables brand, a symbol or letters representing your stable.
Examples:
If you want more than one add-on or a single add on that is bigger than what is shown above, you need to have an item. OR if you want to remove a limb, ear, tail tip etc.. you'll need an item.
To buy these items, please go here: The Sindow Shop *OPEN*
- you may also win/earn these items by doing activities, monthly quests, or using Wishing Pennies
- You may also check the user sales folder as some people might sell their extra items
Please note these things before changing your Sindow!
- Scars cannot be removed once applied!
- line edits cannot be changed once uploaded!
Fur Dye:
Fur dye is used to add unnatural paint-type or tattoo like markings to your Sindow. You may also use this item for Stable brands, which are symbols or letters that represent your stable.
-needed to add on a dye mark if a free add-on has already been chosen
- needed if you want your free dye mark or any dye mark to be larger than the free dye mark range
- If you want several marks over the entire body you only need ONE fur dye item.
You CANNOT simulate any Sindow marking or gene with fur dye! Fur dye is used to add unnatural paint-type or tattoo like markings to your Sindow.
If you want fur dye removed, just go here: The Groomer
Small Scar Pack
- needed to add on a second (or more) area of scarring
- If you want several small areas of scarring, you need One small scar pack per area of scarring that is not the free add-on
- These areas of scarring must not be larger than the max area shown above
You CANNOT use several small scar packs to create one big scar. They are meant for small areas of isolated scarring anywhere on the body.
Large Scar Pack
- needed if you want an area of scarring that is larger than the Max shown above!
- Large scar packs cover anything larger than the blue max shown above, however at least 20% of the fur must be showing somewhere on the body. This is FUR, and does not count the face or back leg skin. Feathers count as fur on Avians/Gigans.
- You only need one large scar pack to cover up to 80% of the body in scars. They can be small individual scars or large scars, something like a giant burn across the body.
Small Line Edit Pack
-Needed if you want to edit the lines outside of your free accessory add-on line erasing.
- This includes tears in the ears, missing ear tips, removal of chunks of fur in crest, chest, or tail hair, an eye, tips of horns (draken), tips of feelers (orientals), some feathers missing (Avians, Gigans), removal of a toe or two.
- With a small line edit pack you get to choose up to TWO of above things to do. As in, remove an eye and put rips in the ears.
- Again this is a SMALL line edit pack. You cannot remove large parts of your Sindow with this item or use more than one of these items in conjunction to remove large parts. Each pack does up to TWO things listed above.
- If you have an idea for a small line edit or aren't sure if your idea counts, please note the group!
Large Line Edit Pack:
- needed if you want to remove large parts of your Sindow.
- Large Line Edit packs allow you to remove limbs, more than half the tail, the whole ear(s), give your Sindow a haircut (as in removing whole crests, chest mane, etc..), remove parts of the snout, or both eyes.
- if you remove a limb, it can be the whole limb or just part of it. If you want to add scarring at the limb removal spot, then you may do so without an extra item
- If you want to add a bionic limb in place of the Sindows natural limb you may do so.
- If your Sindow is BORN with a defect, such has blindness, missing limb, deformed spine, etc... you DO NOT need one of these items and can edit the lines. If your Sindow is born with a defect it'll be listed in its geno! Yes, your Sindow can be born with a defect in your story-line, but you'll need this item to add/remove any large defects.
Just know that if you choose to remove your Sindows limbs, eyes, or give it a disability it wouldn't otherwise have, you will have to complete Defect Training with it, no matter what training you've already completed with the Sindow.
Using items on Sindows that are not uploaded:
This is easier than the below option. All you need to do is list the items that you are using, you must of course have them in your inventory to use, in the design approval comment!
Your add-ons and design will be approved (or unapproved and given corrections) at the same time.
Changing currently uploaded Sindows:
In order to use items that are not the free add-on they MUST be in your inventory. You need to buy them from the shop before you come here!

The Appearance change lab is the place to go when you have an appearance change or gene change item! If you want to add scars, dyes, or small accessories read above.
There have been gene change or gene/marking addition items for a long time, but nothing to really explain each one in detail in the same place or a place to use them. You can buy Appearance change items in The Sindow Shop *OPEN*
You will also be able to earn them rarely from Wishing Pennies and Activities.
Import Redesign Token:
- this item can be bought in the shop or found while exploring. It can also be given out in monthly quests or from wishing pennies.
- The Import redesign token allows you to change your preexisting import to your liking. You CANNOT add genes it does not have or remove genes, only edit the appearance of the genes your Sindow DOES have.
- You can change base shade, eye color, skin color, nail color, and color of the markings.
- You can edit the coverage of the genes and shape. (Just remember that the Sindows expression typically falls beneath the parents. So unless it has an unknown sire or dam then all genes minimum and maximum range should fall beneath the parents.
[x] what you can't do: As said above, you cannot add genes your Sindow does not have or remove the ones it has. You may add ANY of the FREE genes or Add-ons, though.
[x] you can't change marking density and spread.
[x] you can't change the genes to express in a way that does not correspond with the design guide. So, you can't add a flower and call it part of a gene when that gene doesn't allow flower shapes.
[x] If both the sire and the dam both express a gene minimally, then you cannot use the redesign token to give your Sindow the maximum expression for the gene.
The Import Redesign Token is for the WHOLE import. If you’d like to edit something in particular, there are items below for that purpose, so you don’t need to get a rarer, more expensive redesign token.
Add/Remove Free Markings Potion:
- this items allows you to add free marks to your current import.
- it will also allow you to remove these markings.
- These are free markings if your import is not already designed and uploaded. The item is only needed for imports already uploaded.
Eye Color Change Potion:
- this item allows you to change your Sindows eye color to any color you want within the guidelines: Eye color can be any color except true black and true white.
- It DOES NOT cause heterochromia. Unless the Sindow has heterochromia listed in the pheno, it will not add this mutation
Add/Change/Remove Secondary Marking:
- Secondary markings and color are determined by the parent. Here are the normal guidelines:
- If BOTH parents have a secondary, then ALL offspring will have a secondary. The color is determined by the parents as well. It can be exactly the same as the sire or exactly the same as the dam or a mix between the two.
- If ONE parent has a secondary and the other does not, then the offspring can have a secondary or not (it doesn't have to). It will be the EXACT same color as the parent that has the secondary.
- If neither parent has a secondary, then NO secondary should be present in the offspring.
What this item allows you to do:
- Change the way the secondary expresses
- Change secondary color, no matter the parents
- Add a secondary marking, no matter the parents
- Remove the Secondary marking, no matter the parents
These of course are still within the basic guidelines. You can't make up a secondary expression. You still can't have the secondary the same color as the primary marking.
Modifier Add/Subtraction/Change Potion
- Each potion has a RARITY, please pay attention to this
- This potion allows you to add ONE modifier at a time to your Sindow. Modifier will be Heterozygous!
- Change the current appearance of a modifier
- Remove a modifier
- To use this potion on a geno that needs to be uploaded, just link in the design approval comment.
Marking Add/Subtract/Change Potion
- Each potion has a RARITY, please pay attention to this
- This potion allows you to add (if your Sindow does not have a marking). Marking will be Heterozygous!
- Change the current appearance of a marking or change marking type within rarity
- Remove marking
- To use this potion on a geno that needs to be uploaded, just link in the design approval comment.
White Marking Add/Subtract/Change Potion
- Each potion has a RARITY, please pay attention to this
- This potion allows you to add ONE white marking at a time to your Sindow. White marking will be Heterozygous!
- Change the current appearance of one white marking
- Remove a white marking
- To use this potion on a geno that needs to be uploaded, just link in the design approval comment.
Base Color Change Potion
- This Potion allows you to change the base color of your Sindow
- It includes dilution, so if you have a black Sindow and want it to be blue, dilution will be added automatically.
- It DOES NOT add saturation!
- To use this potion on a geno that needs to be uploaded, just link in the design approval comment.
Add/Subtract/Change Saturation Potion
- This item allows you to add saturation to your Sindow in accordance to base. So a black Sindow cannot have red saturation, etc..
- You can remove saturation.
- You can change the shade of the saturation.
- To change the type of saturation, you'll need to use it in accordance with a Base Color change potion.
- To use this potion on a geno that needs to be uploaded, just link in the design approval comment.
Coat Length Change Potion
-Allows you to change the coat length of your Sindow
- To use this potion on a geno that needs to be uploaded, just link in the design approval comment.
On an already designed Import:
Step 1: You will need to find the person who designed your Sindow (if it's you, skip this). You need the original file to edit. If the designer does not have the original file, you can design the import again HOWEVER, everything you are not editing has to be as close to the original design as possible. The designer has the right to refuse to redesign, if you need help designing advertise in the group/discord.
Step 2: Redesign your import!
Step 3: Submit to Design Corrections: comments.deviantart.com/1/5636…
- you must have a link to your Sindows old import
Step 4: Await approval and upload. If you're told to correct something, correct it and send back to Design Corrections.
On a Geno:
Step 1: If you want to add/subtract/change a gene on a geno, just do so, as long as you have the right potion. Make sure your designer is aware if you are using a designer.
Step 2: Design as if Sindow had or didn't have said gene(s).
Step 3: Submit to Design Approval comments.deviantart.com/1/5636…
- Please provide a link to proof of your gene change item.
- Please state which gene(s) have been added/removed/changed
