In 2019, UNITED unveiled their new livery, 9 years after adopting Continental's livery during their merger in 2010. Today, we look at the major changes between the liveries.
Firstly, we must understand what happened to United liveries over the years. The below diagram shows the evolution of the liveries:
As portrayed, UNITED stuck with the blue, red and red colours for quite a bit. The 'Tulip' liveries were prominent from the 1970s to the Continental merger in 2010.
You'll hear me talk about Continental Airlines a lot. According to Wikipedia, 'Continental Airlines was a major United States airline founded in 1934 and eventually headquartered in Houston, Texas. It had ownership interests and brand partnerships with several carriers'.
Continental's livery is shown below:
As we can see, all UNITED did to the livery was change the font and name of the brand. Staff, aircraft and liveries were just some of the items transferred during the merger.
The merger with Continental in 2010 came at a time when all of the 'Big 3'(Delta, United and American) merged. Delta merged with NWA, UNITED with Continental and American with US Airways.
After the merger, UNITED adopted the globe icon and ditched the tulip.
However, after 9 years of the gold and blue, UNITED unveiled their brand new livery-Rhapsody Blue.
As shown above, UNITED introduced a larger, bolder wordmark. Instead of the steady gold line on the bottom section of the fuselage, the airline updated a Rhapsody Blue swoop. The engines and winglets were painted in the UNITED blue. The globe size on the tail was larger and was painted in the sky blue.
