VISION:
For me, education is a natural process that every human develops by exploring the world. And, as each person learns based on the opportunities they have experienced, we, as educators, have a crucial role in providing our students and teachers plenty of meaningful situations where they can put into practice the skills that are going to make them successful in life.
In many schools, classrooms are still being influenced by “the traditional method.” The teachers deposit information to the students, who are sitting quietly in rows, and they asses each child in the same way, everyone is expected to reach the same level, no matter their preferences or abilities. Fortunately, I was very lucky to have many good professors during my life who believed in me, and despite the traditional method, they made me feel unique and capable of reaching all my dreams! That’s why I believe that small actions can start making a big difference in the education systems around the world. The most important thing we should prioritize in our schools is to establish caring and loving relationships between our teachers and students. A genuine strong bond can definitely support students in feeling more secure, engaged, respected, and open to reaching their full potential.
On the other hand, it is crucial to concentrate on keeping alive the intrinsic motivation that kids and most of our teachers have to learn. We should always provide a safe environment where they can feel comfortable with making decisions, solving problems, working collaborative, learning from mistakes, and living through the growth mindset.
How do I think education must be in the future?
As we will continue changing very fast during the 21st Century, our education must be based on developing abilities and skills rather than memorizing things. Here I mention some of the aspects that we as educators should focus on:
PROMOTE LOVE: if we place love at the center of our schools, as a guidance, resource, or support, we'll always take decisions from a kind perspective that will serve us as the compass to create projects or solve conflicts through peace and understanding.
DIFFERENTIATION: each student should have the right to be seen as a unique person, to work at their own pace and to master his/her strengths by recognizing his/her opportunities.
COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATIVE WORK: students must learn how to relate with others. In our globalized world, they need to know how to share responsibilities, listen to others and most of all work as a team. We should let them experience many collaborative opportunities at school so they realize that having many different visions together is more worth it than seeing the world just through their own perspective.
CREATION AND INNOVATION: students should have the opportunity to learn through having hands on. By this, I mean that we should provide them with situations where they have to create, build and experiment with real materials in order to innovate and come up with new ideas. A safe environment to imagine and materialize thoughts.
CRITICAL THINKING: let students take advantage of each situation to analyze, interpret, reflect, solve problems and to evaluate the processes and results obtained in each activity. Plan special moments every day to keep on activating the mind and connecting it to real and meaningful situations.
INNER GROWTH: let students experience mindfulness in their lives. Provide opportunities for them to stop, reflect, know what's happening inside themselves and take more conscious decisions on how they respond in each situation. Teach them how to take care of themselves, of others and of our world!
