Classroom of Waves
Classroom of Waves
Scene from "Dunkirk" by Christopher Nolan
The whole city is abandoned creating an environment of emptiness. Soldiers walk along very confidently away from each other without any fear, there’s no act of interaction because they are in their own thoughts, talking to themselves. The papers are flying due to wind and there’s no one trying to stop it. A sense of liberation and a free flow of thoughts, unboundedness, calmness in the space is felt.
Scene from "The Mirror" by Andrei Tarkovsky
There’s a silence in the air, No movements or interaction was seen. Walking through soft bushes feels like a blanket of fur. The calm environment made it feel as the time has stopped. The flow of wind flattering the brown patch of grass then the green and finally the cold breeze touches the person bringing in chills of refreshment and excitement. The wind flow again flatters the grass, the trees in behind, and then again everything stopped as the flow slows down, The silence fills the air. An experience of something new in the most common things is felt when there’s no disturbance or agitation in space.
Sensation of Wind flow
Gentle wind movement creating a calm environment
Drawing of Phenomenon
The drawing and the experiment speak about an experience that was felt due to the tender flow of wind. The way in which the body feels and melts with the smooth flow of air, making the body fade in its notion.
Iterations
Creating openings in the walls and then adding barriers to bring a sensation of wind flow.
Pavilion
Crafting volume through wave.
A pavilion space interacting with the wind flow. It is to bring a small portion of the sky to the ground. The pavilion seems to be flying. It gives the sensation of being suspended in the air. That effect comes from the creation of an almost invisible structure with a nylon string being suspended to the canvas prism above it which moves due to the flow of air. The wind has the chance of moving the strings in any direction and it also controls the movement of humans inside the pavilion.
Imagining placement of apparatus.
Translating wave into form.

Program Ideas
The program was thought of in such a way that it creates a mundane space into a fun and active space. So the 1st iteration program was of garden tunnel area where people of all ages can come and chill around the space, since the garden is an ambient space in itself the idea went on to skywalk roof becoming a floating roof but it does not have any inhabitation within it the final program which is then finalized is of kinder garden school having a play area on the terrace which will act as a space for an escape from a mundane classroom and ground space.
Site
The site is in the Washim district of Maharashtra. The school is on the outskirts of the city with no development and trees around to block the wind flow. Which makes it a feasible space for an apparatus to work with the natural wind.
Overview
The design acquired half (12m*14m) space of the whole terrace. It is installed towards the left of the terrace since the wind flow is mainly from the North & North- Western direction. The roof of the design is covered with coir wood panels which are lightweight. The Terrace is covered with a polycarbonate sheet roof which helps the vacant area with the shed. The whole design is surrounded by sliding glass panels to restrict airflow and to keep transparency with the surrounding space, the parapet walls have radicle ducts at the bottom for air ventilation in space.
Views
The interior layout of the play area is such that the children are able to experience the floating motion of the wave and its sensation while playing.
Cut Plan at 2.5m From Terrace
The cut plan shows the thread transparency of the design, making it look like a net and colorful floor makes the space more engaging with the children.
Section
The section shows the floating motion of the strings due to wind and inhabitation within it.
