It was built for Alvah Howard Martin (184 – 1918) in 1909 and finished in 1910.  It was designed by Lee and Diehl of Norfolk, Virginia at an estimated cost of $30,000.   The Martin family lived in the house until Alvah Martin’s death in 1918.   The Virginia Club (Norfolk, VA) acquired the house in 1920 and added onto the house.  The Woman’s Club of Norfolk purchased the house on October 22, 1925 from the Virginia Club (Norfolk, VA) to be used by their organization as a meeting place, place for social events, and a home for single women.
