Smith, Louis [Lewis] H.
(Abt 1838-Unknown)
By William "Bennett" White, Spring 2023
Very little records exist for Smith. Lewis Smith was born in Virginia around 1838, and enlisted in the 13th USCT Heavy Artillery in Ohio in January 1865. Attached to Garrison duty at Camp Nelson, Smithland, and Lexington, KY, until being mustered out in November 1865. He was a farmer/laborer before the war according to his enlistment papers. Though little records can be found, there is evidence Lewis was as young as 15 when he joined the Union Army in 1865. An 1880 Census Record identified a Lewis Smith living in the Tanner's Creek area of Norfolk with his wife, Judy. He was working as a laborer at the time, and had one daughter, Cora.
