Project Description
For this project, I looked in to how society is impacted by social media, both negatively and positively. I also reflected on my own usage of social media and if I myself am being impacted negatively.
I took the survey myself, and I think it is clear to say that i was not surprised by the results;
"You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?"
The results, as said previously, did not surprise me. I use my phone quite a long, and that time only seems to increase! I use multiple social media platforms, and I don't depend on it or anything of that matter, but I have gotten so used to checking multiple times in an hour. I'd like to cut down on the hours i spend there, because it really is time I am not gonna get back.
Social Media Impact on Society
The article focused a lot on the effect it has on teens; “What we have found, in general, is that social media presents both risks and opportunities for adolescents,”. Teens and young adults are the largest group that use these social media platforms, and are the ones most affected when it comes to the addiction to social media. I know personally that I am not as bad as other people, that doesn't mean I should fix my usage of social media. I honestly do believe, though, that a lot of good comes from social media. We are able to connect with people in ways we never have before.
Lesson Learned
I learned that, like most things, finding balance is important. Having a social media account you frequent is not a bad thing, but in moderation. I personally will be cutting down the hours I spend on my phone in general. I will also be urging my "social-media-addicted" friends to do the same. These addictions can really affect people mentally and physically
