On the night of March 20, 1957, at 11 PM, a man named Liu Ziran, who worked at the "Revolutionary Practice Research Institute" on Yangmingshan, was shot dead by US Army Sergeant Reynolds in front of Reynolds' residence. However, two months later, the American military court responsible for the case acquitted Reynolds, citing "insufficient evidence for murder charges." This verdict led to large-scale anti-American violence among the Taiwanese people, known historically as the "Liu Ziran Incident."
This event, described by left-wing individuals as a "protest against American violence," planted a strong sense of nationalism in the hearts of the Taiwanese people. Although Taiwan still relied heavily on American support internationally, an invisible line had been drawn between Taiwan and the United States. This line separated two different national sentiments, ways of life, and historical contexts, making reconciliation difficult.
