The picturesque, sleepy little town of Madison, Georgia, sits just off I-20 east of Atlanta and seems like so many other towns that are no more than one or two green exit signs you might pass on any interstate highway – but this one harbors a 150-year-old mystery!

When General W. T. Sherman cut a swath of destruction from Atlanta to Savannah on his famous ‘March to the Sea’ in November/December of 1864, his troops looted and burned everything in their path. But under his orders, they spared the town of Madison. Why?

Was it pity? Political expediency? Or was it love?
